Mice keep getting in [message #223010]

Hi all...

We've had mice getting in our 77 Kingsley since we got it last year. I've slowly been going around and plugging holes, and I think I got most if not all of the ones I can find. We had a spot where the plywood rotted out in the corner just behind the passenger seat that we plugged with bondo. I also caulked the entire rear wheel well areas and made sure the areas where the air lines run in are all sealed.

However, mice are still getting in and we trap most of them under the couch (in this floorplan it is located just behind the driver's seat). Once in a while we'll trap one under the kitchen sink cabinet which is next to the couch. We have traps on the opposite side that have never trapped anything. So it seems that they are getting in on the left side of the coach however I can't find where they are getting in.

Just curious what location(s) that you've seen mice getting in? And how did you fix them?

I have trapped most under my kitchen sink.

however, I do have to admit, that since I have installed some ultrasonic mice devices. I have not trapped anymore.

it could be that I trapped all the intruders already and have not had a re-infestation.

I am sure them little buggers could get in really easy in many many spots. can't imagine blocking them all.

The sewer opening at where thepipe goes int the tank is where some come through.
Sometimes using the sticky stuff at areas where you think they are coming from helps to aid in analizing where .

Check around the two drain holes in the floor that go down to the holding tank. You have one under the cabinet floor below the air pump and one in front of the water tank for the bathroom sink and shower drain. You will have to pull the water tank to get to the second one. They made a very large hole in the floor for both pipes. Cut some aluminum sheet flashing to go around the pipe and screw it to the floor. That stopped the mice for me.

I found a herd of mice living in the heater/blower box under the hood. I had to use a pair of very long needle nose pliers to catch them and pull them out. Yes, they were alive.

I've yet to have a mouse problem, but if I do have one in the future, I shall allow our Maine Coon rescue, Macavity P Pussycat, spend the night in the coach for a few days. He is a world champion mouser.

I can't add anything to the subject of where the mice are getting in, but...I might be able to help keep them away.

Here in the desert, where I live, we have a lot of nocturnal rodents; pack rats, deer mice, kangaroo rats, etc. The problem I have been battling is the pack rats. Taking a cue from the camp hosts at a nearby state park, I put a couple of light ropes under the coach. They are plugged into a little photocell switch so they come on when it gets dark and go off when it gets light out.

I haven't had a rat problem since. The rats, being nocturnal, stay away from the lighted area. Maybe that would help with your mouse problem.

Chris,

There are many places where rodents can sneak in besides where already mentioned. The wall ribs go down past the floor and the channel shape make a good tunnel, and unless filled or plugged up it's a way in. Check for gaps between the rear wheel house and wall.

Check them out.

Thank you for the information. We finally dropped the black tank and yep, the toilet drain had a huge area where I'm sure mice were getting in. The hole cut in the floor has at least a 3/4" space all the way around, between that hole and the toilet drain pipe that goes through it. It looks like there may have been a plastic flange there at one time, but it had been either chewed by mice or deteriorated. We will be doing just as Emery said and putting down aluminum flashing.

The drain holes for the shower drain and kitchen sink seem to also have some sort of plastic flanges and are sealed tight. So far so good.

We will also look at the ribs and other areas and post the findings there too.

I can look right through the heat/A/C intake from out front and see the floor inside! I'm sure some "visitors" have entered through there, and I caught them with a bucket of windshield washer fluid! Going to cover the opening ouside with some hardware cloth (1/4 grid wire mesh) and hope that keeps them at bay. Is there any way to get to that hole in the floor under the toilet without removing the black tank?

Chris, there is also a large gap around the pipe in the wall behind the toilet. You will have to remove the water tank to get to it. That also needs flashing.

On the other side of the tank where the kitchen sink drains is another place. On my 1977 Kingsley I had to take out the air compressor and the small floor in that area to get to it.

You may also want to consider modifying the slip joint for the passenger side of the holding tank. Again you have to take out the fresh water tank to do it.
