Greetings,
Since arriving home from my harrowing trip to AZ where if it weren’t for Steve Ferguson we might still be there, gremlins have surfaced in my 78 Royale…
On the way home the high/low beam switch connected to the turn signal stalk on the Caddy steering column broke and now I have no headlights at all. I was hoping that if I sprayed contact cleaner in the openings to the column it might work, but no such luck. It doesn’t click when pulled like it did when working, so the switch inside is probably history. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement unit? I’d like to repair it myself, so is there a schematic or instructions on how to perform the repair?
Then the air bag system is on the fritz. I have the second generation system with the three toggle switches on the panel under the driver’s side window. The system stopped working all together, so I went to fill the bags from outside at the shrader valves, but it was taking so long to do with the small compressor I had available I tried to switch the system on, and it worked. The problem is that the left side won’t turn off. The compressor keeps running unless I pull the fuse. Once I reinsert the fuse the compressor starts and just keeps running. The right bag was not affected and works properly. I removed the switch and cleaned the terminals, but it looks like that it’s not the problem.
Anyone have any ideas, suggestions, comments?
Thanks,
AMDGMCMan

Sir: the Caddy dimmer switch is on the outside of the column below the dash. It has a rod running to it and is fastened to the column with the same 2 screws that secure the ignition switch. It may be out of adjustment? Try loosening and sliding down just a bit. It should be adjusted with the column in the lowest tilt position. If not part # UDS424 AZ. If you want the flash to pass feature use #UDS485 Auto Zone and add a fused 12v line to the 4th lug.

Silver switch is the ignition, the black & white is the dimmer switch.

If the switch is loose it may have slid down and you will need to slide it up, also check for binding on the rod.

If you do replace the switch there is a lock wire that needs to be removed from the new switch after installing.

Hope you get it fixed Alan. That coach was the first GMC in my driveway
that didn't leak down. It sat for over a week and never dropped so much as
a fraction of an inch. NO shut off valves, just a leak free system.

Thanks Steve,
I know that the suspension is in good shape, I only hope that I can figure out the electrical problem. Do you think there might be a relay that is stuck?

Alan,
Your system is completely different than the one in my '76. I have never
worked on one like yours. I couldn't even begin to make a guess.

Hal: if you have the dimmer on the column , the switch is mounted to the same bolts as the ignition switch and they adjust separately. Since you are having ignitions switch trouble, I might think the bolts have come loose and lost adjustment on both ignition and dimmer switch.
hal kading wrote on Wed, 18 September 2013 20:17 | Must be the time for headlight problems. We were in Elida NM last night on our way to Branson - Couldn't go any further as our headlights wouldn't work and the sun went down. If the steering column dimmer switch goes out, can you loose both bright and dim? Every thing else works but the headlights. We made it to El Reno OK today.

I removed and am now cleaning/repairing the three ... three way switches to the leveling system of my 78 Royale. They are the ones located on the panel below the driver's side window. I have them apart and am cleaning the contact points. The switches were in such bad shape that the foam pieces disintegrated, and I don't know the size or where to reposition them when I reassemble the switches. Any help?

I turned on the ignition after removing the switches, and the compressor still runs. The only way to turn it off, (with the ignition on), is to remove the 30 amp fuse. So I'll have clean switches, but it's not the problem. Any ideas?

Oh one thing ... the warning light on the dash that tells you to switch to the Auto setting remains lit. It used to go out when you put the shifter into drive, but a few weeks back it didn't automatically turn off as in the past. Maybe a connection?
