We left Thursday for Girl Scout Beach Jam, Wildwood, NJ. This weekend Boy and Girl Scouts set up a tent city on the beach and camp all weekend. Since our girls have "been there done that" wind, sand and the noise of 1000 tents blowing in the wind is not that fun, our troop headed to Cape May and stayed at the Beachcomber. This is a really nice campground and only a short drive to historic Cape May and Wildwood. Thursday night Thunder storms delayed our mini tent city, we had three consecutive sites, our GMC and a pop-up on the ends and 5 tents on the center site. We had 7 girls and 5 adults wait out the storms in the GMC for an hour or so, snacks, drinks and Big Bang Theory episodes kept them busy. Friday morning the girls took surfing lessons in Ocean City, that evening we went on a dolphin watch. Boardwalk on Saturday was busy, it happened to also be the fireman's convention weekend. Took some time away from the boardwalk to attend the flag ceremony at Sunset Beach, this ceremony is quite moving, most of the flags flown are the casket flags of Veterans, a brief biography of the Veteran is read, the national anthem is played, then just as the sun is setting, Taps is played and the flag lowered and retired in a proper ceremony. There is a two year waiting list for loved ones ceremony.

Back to the boardwalk for fun and games. A little chilly, but lots of fun.
Drive home took twice as long with all the traffic, at one point we had only travelled 46 miles in 2 hours, 72 degrees, no problem. Next stop, Lakota Wolf Preserve!

The only problem I encountered was during my return trip preflight, upon draining my air compressor water separator, I over tightened the drain and broke it. Had to remove the separator and connect the flex line right to the reservoir. 5 minutes, I was aired up and ready to go. BTW, love my macerator!

Averaged 8.3 MPG on the way down, 60ish MPH, minor traffic,190 miles total one way... I haven't refilled yet, but I'm sure the traffic killed my return trip average.

That sounds intriguing, for the past 3 or 4 years we have organized a "Building Bridges" weekend where participating Boy Scout and Girl Scouts are broken up into coed patrols and compete in skills and games, it has become very popular and troops from other towns now participate. Venturing is a great concept.

Our Kennel Club just started this Crew a few months ago. I think we currently have nine or ten kids in it. They're having fun. One of them roped me into speaking to their 4H crew next month on flockguards, their history, my breed's history, and grooming concepts and operations.

Related to dogs and young people, Bob and I were in Florence, Oregon (I
believe) when we found they were having a "Memorial Day" parade. It was in
April and we finally determined it was honoring Vietnam veterans. I stood
out in the chilly, drizzling rain for more than hour, enjoying every
minute. A highlight for me was watching about 32 high school student dog
trainers with their dogs on leashes in the parade. All stopped and
sitting with their masters, and heeling on command was very impressive.
Looked like a wonderful training class for the students as well as for the
dogs. Maybe you dog guys can encourage that type of program for schools in
your areas.

All our Venturers come from schools in my KC's service area. The 4H is at a local high school too. We found out, we are the first all-breed club to sponsor a Venturing crew according to the AKC.
It's a deal for the kids, most are interested in performance sports, so their dogs needn't be purebred. They're doing Obedience, Agility, Nose Work, and Barn Hunts so far, and having fun at it. A couple competed as Juniors in Conformation. We let them sell lunch at our club's trials and matches to raise money for their excursions, we donate the hotdogs/burgers, they get the buns and fixin's and sell to the crowd. So far, it's doing well. We realize, it is imperative to involve youngsters in dog sports, otherwise the HSUS and like organizations will do away with dogs as pets.
I think I have permission to take the GMC to the Venture meeting in Tennessee next February. While the average teen thinks tents are cool, I think a soft bed and a furnace are cooler.
