Looks like they are gone to the rally already. Most likely we will get our coach towed to his place and then get a rental car to get the rest of the way home and deal with the repair once he gets back from the rally. Better this than getting it towed to some Tom, dick or harry place here in ny/nj.

Called the number and got a message saying they won't be able to return call until Sept 30. Just need confirmation from them on if we can get the coach towed there by our roadside assistance service.

Thanks guys!

I'm somewhat reluctant to say this, but it probably should be said: On the
road problems, which are virtually inevitable with ANY RV, don't come much
simpler than a broken alternator belt.

If that's all it takes to interrupt your plans...

G'day,

I have been in contact by telephone with:

Ken Frey / Bill Bryant / Jared Kohl

Ken will call Jared tomorrow morning as soon as he gets to work.

Bill summarized what he did to get Jared & Stephanie going.

Jared has informed me that the problem seems to be a bit bigger than a broken alternator belt and that there is a large puddle of
oil under their coach hence his desire to get it to Ken and not some hammer mechanic in Joisey! ;-)

The coach is in a safe place and this will get organized tomorrow.

Regards,
Rob M.

Got to wonder of the broken belt maybe flailed something apart and started a leak. Belts coming off the engine can do grevous damage. Ask me how I know this. Ifit hadn't been for Steve's machinist buddy I would of been an extra day in SC and paid air freight from Applied for a water pump pulley ass'y/.

Any issues towing the GMC front wheels up for 106 miles? Having a hard time finding a flatbed that is willing to take us that "far" and the towing company Ken uses has a lowboy that goes for $175/hour x 8 hours which more than likely will NOT be reimbursed by our motor club.

Hi Jared,

Since a lot of the really knowledgable GMCers are on the road, I'll post some info I copied separately off the net years ago from two excellent authorities, Richard (Arch) Archer and Emery.

"I prefer to have the front tires lifted and towed that way. That is the least damaging method that we have seen. We have a contract with a towing co. and they use this method. It is always good to repeat to them: FRONT WHEEL DRIVE, 26 FT. LONG, 12,000 lbs. Otherwise they will bring over a big unit and charge you big time. Be sure to raise the rear 2-3 inch. If your compressor is dead, the truck will have air to raise it up.

Take Care Arch

If you have to be towed just tell them that you have a front wheel drive with the front end approx. 4,000 pounds and the total weight about 12,000 pounds. Also tell them that you want a front wheel lift truck and about how many miles that you want to be towed.

Emery Stora"

Good luck to you, you'll be in good hands with Ken Frey.

Oliver was towed from Poughkeepsie, NY almost Bill Bryant's back yard, to Flanders, NJ about 100 miles, on the rears, airbags at 100% no problems, just expensive as we had yet to buy towing protection and AAA refused to help.

Not the distance itself. The tow truck needs to be equipped to pick up the front without mangling the bumper and/or the radiator (and what-have you). Fill the airbags fully and don't lift the front any more than absolutely necessary to try to keep the rear from dragging.

DO NOT tow the front wheels on the ground. One owner in Ohio found this out the hard way when they towed his that way and it wasn't very far. You would have to disconnect the front axles to tow it.

You don't need a flat bed if the rear wheels are ok. Just tell them you want a tow truck with a lift that goes under the front tires. Tell them that the front weighs about 4000 pounds and the total weight is 12000 pounds.
Those tow trucks are very common.ine was towed over 200 miles with no problem. Just be sure to raise the airbags all the way to lift the rear.

All tow places balking at allstate's ridiculous reimbursement rates and cannot get a tow. Having a mobile mechanic with me now and looking to get the alternator belt on and just keep fingers crossed we can make it the 90 miles to Ken's on our own without anything blowing up.

That's useful info for any GMCers choosing between towing insurance companies.

I've gone 800 miles with the front wheels lifted by a big twin-screw truck
wrecker. Some places (like Ohio) it's difficult to find a tow company with
insurance to cross a state line. By the way, State Farm paid the tow bill.

Subject: Re: [GMCnet] Any way to get in touch with Ken Frey?

G'day,

I have been in contact by telephone with:

Ken Frey / Bill Bryant / Jared Kohl

Ken will call Jared tomorrow morning as soon as he gets to work.

Bill summarized what he did to get Jared & Stephanie going.

Jared has informed me that the problem seems to be a bit bigger than a
broken alternator belt and that there is a large puddle of
oil under their coach hence his desire to get it to Ken and not some hammer
mechanic in Joisey! ;-)

The coach is in a safe place and this will get organized tomorrow.

Regards,
Rob M.

If the oil cooler line is damaged, you can just cut it at the damage and slide a hose coupler on and a couple clamps...
