Picked up ANNIE from storage at JimB's Monday and brought her home to load. First problem was no power to the microwave or refer. Called JimB and he reminded me that we had had that same situation back in the spring. Pulled the 50 amp plug apart and the black wire was off and not making contact. Turned out the screw would not tighten all the way. Replaced the plug.
Started on the road yesterday with no problems and all gauges reading right were they should. Stopped at the Flying J in Kenly, NC on I-95 for the nite and we hit the sheets. This morning when I started the engine the sight glass (really plastic) on my fuel filter/water separator blew out the bottom and gas was going everywhere. Shut her down and got a coupling from a mechanic on site and bypassed the filter. Drove to Richmond, Va and Mike (my old neighbor) put a metal fuel filter on in his shop. Went and visited old friends and family. So tonight we are in the KOA in Ashland, Va and in the morning head out for Harrington,DE for a Tidewater Crab rally this weekend.
The plan is Sunday to head back to Richmond with a start for Branson Monday morning.

Sorry we'll be missing you at the Crab's rally. Jim & Elly have talked a lot about you guys. (all good of course... ;-) )
We'll be taking our coach up to New England this weekend.
Enjoy the trip and meeting up with the awesome Crabs!

Jim,
Is the fuel filter / water separator meant to be used with gasoline containing ethanol or diesel fuel?

I'm not asbsolutely sure, by I'm pretty sure that glass filters are prohibited in boats for that very reason! You don't want gasoline fumes (heavier than air) in the bilge (bottom) of boats where sources of ignition are possible! Big, nasty (and fatal) explosions are possible and happen every year!

It is for marine gas. I know marine gas doesn't have ethanol but it was on the coach when I bought it 9 years ago. Plastic threads only hold now on the last thread to the filter. We'll talk about it at Branson. The whole coach could have gone up in flames. Thank God I have fire suppression (though it never got to that).
|
I'm glad you dodged that bullet, Jim. Those water separators are sneaky bastards. I've been working on the coach (for too long) and a couple or three weeks ago the clear plastic bowl just fell off. I'm glad it happened when I was working on the coach instead of driving it.

Robert Mueller wrote on Sun, 15 September 2013 16:14 | G'day,
I thought ethanol was hydroscopic; if I am correct why do you need a water separator in a GMC's fuel system?
|
The PO installed a new pump, filter and separator after he got back to South Carolina from picking up the coach in AZ. He had some issues and he threw the kitchen sink at the fuel delivery system. From my more recent experiences, he didn't quite get it!
There was also something like, and I'm not making this up, 22 connections between where the fuel line came off the selector valve and where the braided fuel line feeding the TBI started. 22 connections within the space of about three feet. Sheesh. One of the worst examples of a Time & Materials job I've ever seen.
To answer your question, I don't need a separator and it won't be going back on. It will be removed along with about 17 connections.
