Looking for a DIY airbag replacement tutorial.
I have a 76' PB 26'. I have new off the shelf Firstone bags from Cinnabar
which came with the coach when I bought it in 2009. Driver side still good,
passenger side has gotten progressively worse. I have 2 new bags and want
to know if I should just replace the passenger that is faulty or just
replace both?
I would like to install the valves right at the bags to.

Many thanks in advance,
Eden in CT.

I would install both, and keep the better of the old ones for a spare.

Todd Sullivan made a video of installing his airbag system, and it shows how to take off the old one. Reverse the procedure to put the new ones on.

See here for the inflation process:

Jim K has the kits for installing shutoffs and valves at the bag:

Let us know how it goes.

~ Eden;

It Was A Simple DIY Job For Me
When One Of My Air Bags Was Getting
Frayed.

I just used my stubby bottle jack
and a couple if jack stands and kept
the best air bag for a spare.
I also installed Jim Bounds GMCcoop
Cut-Off Valves at the same time.

The agenda for Branson has Rob presenting on air bag protection.
If possible you may want to review before changing them out.

G'day,

LarryW and I are hoping to organize taping the whole sequence but at the very least R&Ring the bags and cleaning them would be
taped. The seminar would start with that as it will have to be done at my coach and there's not enough room around the rear
suspension for a lot of people to watch how it is done. Once that is shown I will attempt to put the protective covers over the
bags. The operative word in the previous sentence is "attempt" as I've never done this before. Should be interesting and may provide
a few laughs as I wrestle with the bags trying to get the covers on!

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

I remember you showing me airbag covers at Amana last year - they're the Bob Sternfels' covers, right? Bob's coach was up for sale on eBay a while ago and in the description his grandson(?) said that Bob had some serious health issues. Do you know if he's recovered?

My son and I just replaced both airbags on our 77 Kingsley early this spring. Both new bags are from Cinnabar's new supply. They came with the metal cones so make sure you have metal cones as they are far better than the OEM plastic cones.

We jacked up the wheels using bogie plates and a stubby bottle jack using a jack hook. When we first tried to get the wheels off the ground it took a lot of jacking. It's so much better using the bogie plates. And, don't forget to let the air out of the old bags before you get the wheels completely off the ground, probably just as soon as you get the weight off the wheels. This keeps the airbags from pushing the wheels apart and stressing the shocks.

We have shraeder and shut off valves in place too which are a great help. Our auto-leveling system works pretty good but there is a small leak which we haven't found yet. Once the airbags are where we want them and the coach is going to sit for a while we shut the valves off at the bags which isolates them from the rest of the system. We also put blocks under the bogies so when the air leaks the blocks hold up the wheels. All is working pretty good considering all that's involved.

Good luck,

Richard,

I had a brief email exchange with him noting that I was going to do a demo on installing his bags. I called him to find out if there
were any tricks to installing them but he never called me back.

That's all I know.

Regards,
Rob M.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the info on Bob Sternfels. Never met him, but he sounds like one helluva guy.

If anyone wants those protective bags, I have few left.

Hi Eden,

I've done the OEM airbags a few times (thank you Jerry Wheeler!) and would be happy to walk you through it. I'm also in central CT and could drop by to help if that would be useful.

You need a big jack under the bogie, and a big box end wrench to get the nuts off (1-1/4" or 1-1/2" I think).

The procedure is pretty straightforward -- raise the bogie to get most of the compression off of the bag, release the air pressure, disconnect the air line, remove the nuts, squish the bag ends together to remove (might help to raise the bogie slightly more before removal).

Anyway, let me know if I can help!

Good luck,
Andrew
