I went out about a week ago to get the coach ready for Branson and the coach would not start. It was a dirty battery cable. So I took them both off and cleaned them with a battery post brush and every thing was fine.

This evening I was back again and while I was there I decided to replace the GEN light that has been out for about 2 years. It turned out to be an oxidized socket connection rather than a blown bulb. When I was done I tried to start it and all I had was click, click, click.

On man, now what? I assumed that the 9 year old commercial truck engine battery finally quit. I checked the battery and found the positive cable connection was slightly warm. I pulled it apart and it was clean. I decided that the brush may not have done the job so I went at the post and the cable with a Dremmel sanding disk until everything was not just clean but shiny.

Woll-ah, that took care of the problem.

I re-greased the connection with anti-ox grease. I did the same to the negative terminal and replaced the battery clamp bolts.

My point out of all of this is clean is not necessarily clean unless both the terminal and post are shiny.

Let's see what else I can break on the coach before Branson next week. I almost always have to fix things twice.

A spray of Caig Deoxit on both surfaces before connecting does wonders.

Ken, same thing on my 5 year old house batteries. I emailed you they might be failing, was bad connections, all of them. Was even causing my digi panel to flicker back into the red. If there is just a little bit of corrosion showing then you better take them off and clean. Cleaning the outside only makes you feel better.

I had these cables apart the first time and cleaned them first with a solvent to remove all of the grease and then with a battery post brush. I reinstalled them with anti-oxidation grease.

My point was that clean is not clean if they are not shiny. That battery post cleaner brush / tool did not do the job. There was no white corrosion on them before or after cleaning them the first time.

They are clean and greased now.

Don't know if it was a bad cable or a bad connection that got me the other day. At this stage of the game I'm wondering if all new cables might just be in order as a preventive measure.

Does anyone on this post have proper battery cable making equipment? I know there are a couple of Bluebird guys who have invested in quality tools to make battery cables. They are routinely at the rallies.

I suspect most of our cables are more readily available than on a bus, but not sure.

Pre-made battery cables are available at autoparts stores in various wire gauge sizes, lengths, and terminals. Use the lowest numbered cables that will fit!

That is what I did to install the two big 6V batteries on the Jimk K slide out battery tray behind the Onan.

I bought all of my engine cables. For my solar I made them using a big crimper I bought on line. I have some 00 cables with big connectors. No corrosion or loose ones yet.

Stick, you can get the front ones by length from Slack in Gainesville or Advance anyplace. We had one of those tools with the dies down to 00-350, I think it ran us around 250 =- 300 bux. It went when Susquehanna sold the station.
