Gene;
Whwn we meet in Coos Bay - If I am Tall, have a Big Belt Buckle, Tight
Jeans, Denium Shirt and a large cowboy hat on you know I am from Texas. Of
if I have Poncho's - highly decorated with lots of bling, wear a sombraro,
and speak spanish, you will know I am from New Mexico. However If I show
up in winter clothing, a Hudson Bay Blanket wrapped around, a Beaver skin
Hat, wearing green long John's you'll know I am from the North of the
49th.
Dwayne
White Rock (there really is a giant White Rock on the Beach front - placed
there by . . . . . . . ., many moon's ago and maintained it's white look
by regular paint jobs. Keeping our public service alive and well.

[]We will be driving from Portland to Coos Bay. Which is the best route?
Hello Peter
You did not indicate how much time you have, or which route you are taking to Portland, but here are a few suggestions.
If you follow the Columbia out to Astoria, there is a superb maritime museum. It focuses on the coast guard and on the bar pilots. Fort Stevens State Park is one of the best Oregon State Parks. It has military history and natural history opportunities in one location. Nearby is Fort Clatsop, the wintering quarters for the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Moving down the coast Cannon Beach is worth a stop. If you are pulling a towd, be sure to go up to Ecola State Park on the northern outskirts of Cannon Beach Great views of the haystack rocks and wildlife viewing potential. We've seen whales offshore from here.
Tillamook, a little further down the coast, has the cheese factories with tours available. There is also an air museum that has the largest remaining all wood hanger. They were originally built for dirigibles. South of Tillamook is Cape Lookout State Park with 38 hookup sites.
If shopping is a priority and you weren't fully shopped out in Portland, Lincoln City has outlet malls and Devils Lake State Recreation Area provides overnight camping.
Newport has seafood restaurants, fishing charters and the Rogue craft brewery. Yaquina Head lighthouse and Yaquina Bay lighthouse are at the harbour entrance and south of town is another of the superb Oregon State Park campgrounds, South Beach.
Just north of Florence is Carl G. Washburn State Park and to the south is Jessie M Honeyman park. These are convenient to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation area. There are dune buggy rentals in this area.
Reedsport has an interesting small harbour. Fishing charters are available.
Coos Bay is just down the road.
If you prefer heading south from Portland there are more State parks available for camping and other diversions.
Champoeg State Park is 27 miles from Portland. Employees of the Hudson's Bay Company were among the first settlers in the Willamette Valley and some remained after HBC moved it's facilities to Fort Victoria, on Vancouver Island. Champoeg reflects that part of the history of Oregon.
East of Salem, is Silver Falls State Park. It has a network of trails and bike paths. The historic lodge and many of the facilities were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, including the myrtle wood furnishings in the lodge.
About half way between Salem and Eugene, at Shedd, is Thompson Mills State Historic Site. This is a water powered grain mill dating to 1858. If your timing is right you can tour the mill and managers residence.
South of Eugene, just beyond Cottage Grove, you can access OR 38 which will take you along the Umpqua River. This is very scenic and will bring you to the coast at Reedsport. Watch for elk.
Have fun and for whatever amount of time you have available, enjoy the great state of Oregon.
