4D and 8D both fit behind the APU. If you use AGMs (more expensive but sealed, can be installed in any orientation and don't off gas hydrogen) you don't need to get to them for service. There is room above the AGM for addl storage or for an inverter or converter if you want to place it there. You never want to put any electrical item near a wet cell battery because of the danger of explosion and/or corrosion. 4D and 8D batteries are very heavy so you need some kind of lift to get them started into the compartment but once started in they slide quite well. 4D and 8D provide something in the range of 200 to 250 amp hours of capacity. AGMs can be charged faster and charge to a higher voltage so some claim they offer a bit more useable capacity than their wet cell or gel cell cousins. I have four 6v wet cells in the Royale located in the PS rear storage locker where the propane tank is on GMC coaches and a 4D AGM behind the APU in the Clasco.
