We arrived at Hill AFB, Ogden, UT, yesterday and will depart tomorrow.
I've got to choose the route. I-70 sounds very scenic, but also perhaps
too challenging for the GMC. It has not been immune to vapor lock and
other altitude/heat related issues. The 7,000 --11,000+' elevations do
concern me Who's tried their GMC on I-70 across UT & CO? Would you do it
again?

We have had our GMC along that route. No problem but I have been driving the mountains for years even with my 3.07 pulling a 4000 pound Jeep in the past.
Rob Mueller came across Colorado last summer on I70 from Grand Junction to Denver. Lets see if Rob answers this.

As you get to the higher elevation the temperature will drop.

Drove east and west a number of times our son live in the Denver area.
TBI, Aluminum radiator,180 Thermostat.
After market gages
Some times reads 190
Also up over Wolf Creek at 10,000 feet pass last summer in August.

Emery, Bruce, etc who helped,
Y'All have given me confidence.
Because of some apparent accessory (not engine cooling system) problems as
we arrived here, today I installed a new fan clutch to replace the one that
hasn't engaged since GA. Hopefully that, with the moderate temperatures
forecast, will minimize problems.
I also installed the driver's side Remflex gasket I hauled from GA. those
were not at hand when I installed the engine so I used what I had. The
rear end of the standard gasket finally blew out enough to prompt HER to
ask me to fix it. I kinda liked the "power roar" -- what I could hear of
it. :-)
Wish us luck. Maybe I'll get some good photos for the blog.

I have driven it east to west in a 1978 / 403, my 1976 / 455 both directions, and another 1976 / 455 west to east. All were 26 foot coaches with a 3.07 final drives. It gets a little slow nearing the summit but I like that route.

Ken,
I15 to I70 to Grand Junction then US50 to Pueblo or Colorado Springs takes you over Monarch Pass at 11311 elevation then down to Royal Gorge and along the Arkansas River. We did that 2 years ago in reverse direction. Beautiful scenery-Monarch was only big hill that I remember and it was slow but no problem with 455-3:07 and quadrajet.

One of the tricks Rob M. used last year was to keep his fuel tanks full
when going over the higher elevation passes.

G'day,
There are two passes through the Rockies one is the Eisenhower (12,000ft ?) and another one that I can't remember the name of which
was a bit lower and I can't remember if they were on route 70 or not.
Rob was brain dead when he took this route. He had worked out that in order for his little Facet pump that feeds the mechanical pump
to stop vapor lock both tanks needed to be filled in the mornings. When he went over the lower pass the tanks were near full and it
was slow going, However, when he went over Eisenhower pass they were not and it was touch and go. The GMC would surge / almost stall
/ surge / almost stall repeatedly. He was REALLY worried that he was going to need a tow to get to the pass. As LUCK would have it
he made it!
Needless to say from that point onwards each morning or night before both tanks would get filled and the rest of the journey was OK.

If anyone has contact with Ken, Eisenhower tunnel is closed for east bound
traffic due a semi roll over at Georgetown.

There are alternate routes At Fresno south on HY 9 to Fairplay and catch
HY285 into Denver
or take HY9 at Silverthorne, to Kremmling and catch HY 40 to I 70 east of
Georgetown.

I guess I50 eastward toward Colorado Springs is where Bob and I
"accidentally" went over Monarch Pass in 2005. Our gear shifter cable had
broken in Williams Lake Canada. (I was navigating.) Bob couldn't
downshift going up or down, but we made it safely. Go for it, Ken.
