Yep, after months of trepidation, I finally had to get around to getting my 78 Royale smogged. For people who may not know, in California, it's nearly impossible to beat the test. You can't pay the guy off. It's all done internally in a computer analyzer that is hooked into the state Motor Vehicles Dept. The guy doing the test doesn't even know whether or not you passed until the final printout.
One advantage of the test is it gives you a number of measures of useful information - CO, hydrocarbons, at different rpms. Anyway, turns out my 403 is pretty strong and the smog numbers look like I can get past the next time or two at the smog test center.
So now that I know I am in good shape, I ordered a dash instrument panel with a whole bunch of gauges. Really, the only thing preventing me from going on a nice long trip is not knowing what my drive train is doing. Well soon I'll know.
I'm happy
