Yep, after months of trepidation, I finally had to get around to getting my 78 Royale smogged. For people who may not know, in California, it's nearly impossible to beat the test. You can't pay the guy off. It's all done internally in a computer analyzer that is hooked into the state Motor Vehicles Dept. The guy doing the test doesn't even know whether or not you passed until the final printout.
One advantage of the test is it gives you a number of measures of useful information - CO, hydrocarbons, at different rpms. Anyway, turns out my 403 is pretty strong and the smog numbers look like I can get past the next time or two at the smog test center.
So now that I know I am in good shape, I ordered a dash instrument panel with a whole bunch of gauges. Really, the only thing preventing me from going on a nice long trip is not knowing what my drive train is doing. Well soon I'll know.
I'm happy

Just an FYI.. The only way to fool the Ca emmisions is.... Take of a spark plug wire and limp in for inspection. It will fail. Come back in a week with the wire hooked up and a couple old service reciepts for new plugs. Run it through, should pass... if it still fails but shows a certain percentage of improvement from the first test they still pass you. I only lived in LA for a few years but,it is not easy unless you get into something Valid pre-1972 Cali says 1975 but the banks and dealers all say 1972.
Anything older than 1964 is too old.

The GMC motorhome never had a catalytic converter so you would not have to have one for the smog test.

The smog test should be easy, and while you cannot cheat on anything with
an ODBC-II plug, on the gmc, you could hook anything up, and claim it was
your motorhome to the smog test equipment. You can be something like 2x
worse than was permitted, and your coach was probably half the original
spec when new, so you can be 4x as bad. If you have an issue with passing
smog, you should get that fixed, your milage will probably get noticeably
better.

Really, CA smog is no big deal. You are only expected to have the original equipment, so no expectations of catalytic converter, etc. I haven't met any operators that look very hard during the visual. If it doesn't pass, there's an engine issue that needs attention before you'd want to drive it very far anyway.

I know the GMC has no Cat or a restictor in the filler neck for "Unleaded Fuel Only"
So how I wonder do they determine emmisions? The other way to beat them is the $15 per gallon gas at 110 octane. Burns clean with no corn and such.

They sniff your tail pipe for carbon monoxide, partially burned
hydrocarbons, and perhaps NO2 (not that you should be putting that out at
idle). Smog.

Whats the deal with the dyno and FWD? When my car goes in for dyno tests, they just strap it down backwards and let her fly. Most all the stupid cars people drive today are FWD,transverse little motors but FWD still.

Tucson's tests are not as stringent as Maricopa County's, for older vehicles. I have not had to run mine on the rollers. If it passes the idle test, it's been good to go.
