The '78 will be as good as it gets mileage wise - the 403 is a really nice motor. The later years have improvements that are significant, too.
The combined wisdom of the GMC universe is available here, so you might post a host of details about the coach you're considering... you'll no doubt get a deluge of opinions which will help you approach the decision in a more informed manner.
In terms of logic:
1) Buying ANY motorhome requires a temporary displacement of logic and reason.
2) Buying a 35 year old motorhome seems like a huge risk, but our coaches will likely outlive another few generations of other more expensive coaches.
3) Measure your economics in terms of how much this coach will enrich your life, not in the resale value of the coach after you're done upgrading it.
4) You'll never find a more engaged, active owner's community than this one. Assuming you do at least some of your own wrenching, this resource will save you buckets of money (compared to flipping the keys and checkbook to your local RV shop).
5) Keep us posted!
