On our 78 Royale. The dash A/C wasn't performing like I thought it should. But the compressor was fine. The head pressure was way to high. I noticed the temp on both sides of the dryer were too different from each other. I put a new dryer in. ( I found that the filter inside the dryer was plugged. As I cut it open to see. )Pumped the system down. Then charged it with R 12 for now. Going to Dura Cool soon. Head pressure came down. But still to high. My fan wasn't pulling in enough air in to get rid of the heat. So off to get an American made Hayden fan clutch. There are 3 listed in the clubs parts book. Standard duty # 2705, Heavy Duty # 2747, then Severe Duty # 2797 that is listed as RECOMMENDED. I bought all 3. Then went home to play by comparing the performance of all 3. The results was VARY clear by reading my gauges that were attached to my A/C unit. The outside temp was 92. The humidity was at 69 percent. Readings were taken at idle. That's heat load. The Standard
duty # 2705 wasn't as good as my used one. That one should be removed from the list. Heavy Duty # 2747 fared better. But still lacked at these extremes. The severe duty # 2797 made the grade. In short.. Before you replace that compressor. Put in a new dryer, and #2797 fan clutch. I learned the HARD way.
