Hello all,

I need some help. I'm on the road and my odometer stopped working. It had 88xxxx miles then just started clicking, jumping and now is stuck at 991xx miles and now the speedo reads slow. I took a video.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vhTXfoqrQq4&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DvhTXfoqrQq4

Is this something I can fix on the road or does it need to be replaced.

Thanks everyone

Todd

If you can drive without it I would unscrew it till you can find out if its the cable jumping,or the governor getting ready to go out.You will know right away if the governor goes as the speedo will go to zero and it will shift down to second then first
then,No Forward or Reverse. Unscrew it.How do the rest of you all feel on this one?
Am I giving bad advice?

i'm don't think it is the governor or cable because the odometer jumped 13,000 miles then got stuck but the speedometer still works. i can see the number on the odometer start to moved then get stuck, i hear a click and the numbers move back a little bit. it looks like something is binding?????

I was really hoping this happened to someone else and they could tell me to just put a little WD40 on it or bend some magic tab.

I had a similar problem; there was a clicking noise related to my speed;
the faster I went, the faster the clicks. Emery walked outside my coach
while I drove it slowly as we tried to figure out if it was a bearing or
whatever. Emery then came inside the coach and could see the speedo needle
jumping (don't know why I didn't notice it). About 500 miles later, the
speedo just quit working altogether. Turns out it was the device
(transducer??) between the lower and upper speedo cables; the gears in it
were dust (it is part of the cruise control). I got that new part and that
solved my problem. Others have been skipping this device and using just
one long speedo cable (bypassing this part; sorry, don't remember for sure
if it was the transducer or not).

Odometer gear is toast. Pickup another speedometer. You can set the odometer to whatever reading you want.

If it was me, I'd disconnect the speedo cable to reduce load on the drive gear to preclude losing transmission governor information. And either get another cluster/speedo from the Men's Mall or ship that one to one of the instrument fixit outfits in Hemmings. That one looks to be toast.
I >think< there's a rule says you're s'posed to put a sticker by the patent plate on the vehicle noting the odometer change and the old odometer mileage when it was removed. To whom it applies and under what conditions, I'm not sure - I've bought a couple of rides with swapped speedos and they have the sticker.

It is likely slop in the drive to the wheels with the numbers on. Get a little side play, and they can slip - jump - do strange and amrvelous things. HOWever, to preclude the chance of overloading the drive grear in the trans, I'd disconnect the cablt rto the speedo. If something in it jams the rotating magnet, the load on thecable increases drastically, andd this can cause major heartburn by stripping the drive gear.

thanks all. I'll disconnect it before i continue on the trip. I really don't want to kill the governor over something simple like a broken odometer.

FYI I got 7.9 MPG pulling a 10x6 trailer driving between 60-65 from Detroit to Indy to Nashville before before the odometer started died.

How do you disconnect the cable from the speedo? I pressed the flat spring in and tried to pull the cable out but it didn't move. Is that the correct procedure?

Thanks everyone.

any good speedo shop in your area should be able to fix it and repaint it like new.

I have had this done on many car when speedo broke.

In Los angles I have been to 3 that have done great jobs on GM and Porsche speedo's

Look and work like new when repaired.

usually about 50-100 depending on problem.
