I had an uncle that was into antique tractors and such. Several times we went to the Thresher-mans convention in Duquoin, Il. You have to be around some of the steam engines to appreciate the amount of power they can put on the ground. On top of that they make very little noise unless they are really getting on it.
They had this demonstration in a nearby unworked field. A steam traction engine pulling a man operated 7 bottom plow. (one man on each plow bottom to raise and lower it...7 men). The other tractor was an early gas powered tractor. HUGE beast...well both were huge but the gas engine tractor was even bigger.
They were side by side, the gas engine started off with no plows in the ground and they dropped them in one at a time as the tractor built up speed. The steam engine, dropped all seven at once and just rolled off, hardly making a sound.
Amazing to watch.

Matt,
Speaking of draft horses Google Budweiser TV ads, they have a number of them on You Tube that are great!

Those beautiful draft horses were able to pull that rig out of the snow is the same answer. What most people don't understand is
that as soon as you spin a wheel on a bad surface (snow, ice, mud or wet grass) the µ goes down to zilch.....
Hooves just don't do that except in very rare conditions.
Matt
