I want to move my brake lights over to a circuit that is only on when the key is on. My Brake lights are LEDs and don't pull that many amps but I don't think I want to pull it off the ignition switch or circuit the voltmeter is on.

I have a devil of a time making sense of schematics. Is there a particular circuit I can use (I'm not using the cruise control), or do I need to get a relay and wire it to a the distribution panel and trigger the relay from the ignition circuit for the brake light line?

I'm just so dang useless with automotive wiring. Why can't everything be sheet metal... Shocked Laughing

Kerry, You can use the Yellow wire that is in the block going into the heater fan. The yellow wire carries current when the ignition key in on, even when the motor is not running. The design was to apply a little over pressure into the passenger cabin to keep exhaust fumes out ( and deadly carbon monoxide).
I use it to trip a automotive relay pulling in a a higher amperage line for other uses.
This should work for your intentions to have the brake lights active only when the ignition is on.

Don't forget the brake lights are also the rear directional signals and flashers. May not be a simple change.

I'm looking at the wiring diagram and the same 20 amp fuse powers the stop lamp switch, the hazard switch the turn signal switch. All now work with the key OFF.

Kerry, I do not understand why you want to change this and put the added load for these lamps through the ignition switch.

Yeah it would.

The brake light circuit comes from 12V source through the brake light switch (under the dash at the top of the brake pedal assembly, according to my MM), to the contacts in the bulb sockets.

Kerry just wants to change the source of the 12V from unswitched to something like the ACC bus of the ignition switch.

The low speed fan power wire that Tom mentioned will work, if it is not a smaller gauge than the OEM brake light wire.

Many people have disconnected that low speed fan power wire at the resistor pack on the blower box to enable a full OFF of the fan. http://www.gmcmotorhome.com/tech/heatfan/index.html

The next owner will be cursing his PO (Kerry) for mangling the wiring harness. Laughing

Ken, I want to be able to use the KISS parking brake without having my brake lights on all the time.

It sounds like I need to get a 20 A relay and trigger the existing circuit with the yellow wire that Tom mentioned.

I don't have to worry about getting thought poorly about by the FO because the wiring is hacked....it's already beyond hacked... Shocked Shocked Laughing

just be sure you
- label every wire you find
- put the color of the wire
- date every page and change
-draw a schematic of the changes you make
- a written description of the reasons why
- all in your "l0g book"you are keeping on all of the changes you are making
- this "log" book is a good addition to your file cabinet of GMC info

Gene,

I think you require all that just to make me feel really BAD about my
meager little Brother TZ labels on my wires. :-(

Why not just a master battery disconnect?

Like this

Leave your wiring alone.

Neal has it nailed. This is getting too complicated. I suspect most have shutoffs for engine and house batteries. Just flip it to off.
Just my opinion. I like my simple line lock but some do not.
