It is called the illiterate mechanic protection act. For mechanics that can not read the English writing on the can.

Next they will start requiring different colors on our money for those who can not read numbers.

I agree Ken but on the other hand wouldn't you think that if someone was in the brake fluid business that they would be aware of all of the government regulations?

I feel sorry for them but remember that the government is here to help us. (in case anyone reads this that doesn't know me - that is a joke, not a funny one)

This is what ATE had to do as their blue brake fluid never was officially approved.
It was appreciated by many folks as they could easily tell when their brake fluid was totally flushed by simply changing from the normal fluid to the blue, then back again at the next flush.

I guess they could get by saying it's for off-road use only, but you know what liability law is like these days. Sometimes I'm amazed that anyone makes anything anymore!

I spoke with a tech at Hoerr Racing Supply in NJ about the stuff. I was looking to buy some Super Blue based on Rob's recommendation, and was questioning why they had so little of the blue stuff in stock - seven cans of the Blue left versus hundreds of the amber.

The tech said the Blue could no longer be imported and sold in the US, didn't mention a recall, and said that they'd had a mini-run on the Blue when people started hearing of the Blue's impending demise.

The eBay supply of the Blue has also dried up within the last few days.

Not a big deal. When I run out of the Blue that I have, I'll just switch between amber and clear.

Ken,

Yes, ATE has the best specs for the use in our GMC's. The Blue and Yellow colors made it a piece of cake when you want to flush it.

Currently Double Trouble has Blue in it and I will flush it with Yellow when I get back.

I'll deal with the color change later.

I find it fascinating that the DOT finds that the color could confuse people but creating a spec DOT 5.1 (ethanol based) when DOT
5.0 (silicone based) is OK. They are TOTALLY incompatible! MORONS!

I can tell you what the Germans that make this fluid are saying "sheiss dumb Americaner DOT." and AFAIC they're right!

Rob M.

Larry,

OK, so Yellow will still be available, which ATE fluid is clear and has the same specs?

PS - BTW everybody that's crediting me with finding the ATE fluid I may have found out about it from Larry, I just don't remember!

Rob,
Plan to use yellow the next flush, then 3 yrs later *IF* Blue is still not available, I will flush to the High Performance Ford fluid that has been recommended on this forum. That Ford fluid is clear. Then back to yellow...Ford...yellow...Ford...etc. I'd bet that ATE will find a way to make the Blue available. May take a few years, but I think we will see it again. Who knows maybe it will be it will be offered in chartreuse... Wink JWID

Emery,

Ethanol based brake fluid? Where / how the hell did I come up with that one?

I'll tell you how, just before responding to KenH's email I had been searching for gas stations with REAL gas so ethanol was on my
mind.

Hmmmmm I'll bet you'd have a clean brake system if you filled it with ethanol! ;-)

At any rate let me try again; I found the following chart on the internet that demonstrates my point very well, hopefully it won't
get all scrambled up by the GMCnet:

Brake Fluid Base Dry Boil Temp Wet Boil Temp Color Common Uses

DOT 3 Glycol 401 F/205 C 284 F/140 C Colorless to amber Passenger cars and trucks

DOT 4 Glycol 446 F/230 C 311 F/155 C Colorless to amber Passenger cars and trucks

DOT 5 Silicone 500 F/260 C 356 F/180 C Purple Military and show vehicles

DOT 5.1 Glycol 518 F/270 C 374 F/190 C Colorless to amber Racing cars

It also shows why the DOT was concerned some dumb ass who can't read the bottle / can could confuse Purple for Blue.

For those of you who have never used silicone fluid it is SERIOUSLY PURPLE!

Why in the world they didn't create DOT 6 is beyond me.

Regards,
Rob M.

They would have to use two hands? Though I always assume they must have some reason to do what they do, there are many times I certainly can't figure out what it might be!

The Super Blue brake fluid was never "OK" for street use (according to DOT and the manufacturer) and was never claimed to be. Seems odd to have DOT recalling something that was never DOT approved.

But then again these people making the rules are some of the same ones that think that if you put to much on an island it will capsize!

ATE Super Blue is on sale at bavauto.com for 11.95 a liter. If you purchase over 150$ shipping is free.

I couldn't find it anywhere in stock for less than 20$ a can, so I purchased 13 bottles from Bav for a total of 155$ shipped to my NY address. Hopefully they won't cancel the order due to lack of inventory :)

Hi Dwayne,

Hows it going with you? I seam to recall reading somewhere that you sold your business and are officially retired. If that is true, then congrats. Its a well deserved accomplishment!

Funny that you should write me a note. I was just yesterday thinking of doing the same to you.

I have been quite busy advancing the house renovations so the coach hasn't progressed much. The present plans are to get the frame-rails and front subframe sandblasted in the next month and sent out for galvanizing. This winter my big project is to go through the engine and transmission as well as reassemble the frame & suspension. A bit ambitious but i need to start somewhere or it just doesn't get done.

Our 2014 goal is to do some short summer travels to gain trust in the coach and prove that it is in a mechanically reliable and operational state. Any remaining problems will be relatively easy stuff to fix and not a major show stopper with regards to travel. I've slept in enough tents that having the coach to sleep in is luxury living, even if nothing works in the living area. I can fix the little stuff as we go.

This approach gives us the opportunity to decide what interior furnishings and features we like/need and which we don't. We can then adapt the living space to our needs as we go and be comfortable with our decisions.

As a career mechanic. I have done enormous amounts of research on the various TZE mechanical weaknesses and upgrades. I have a good idea of what we need in terms of the mechanicals and most of the components have been purchased. Just need to put the big puzzle back together now.

Budgetwise we won't be able to make the route 66 tour you are planning for 2014. Timewise i doubt our coach would be ready to trust that far from home, and i am not able to get the necessary time off from work.

Once i get my head into our TZE rebuild i intend to post updates on my progress. I'm sure i'll have lots of questions for the brain trust on GMCNet.

Take care
Les Burt
