And thanks for your service, Howard. I'm always on the lookout for a Vet to
help. People *do* fall through the cracks sometimes, and I try to save
them. It takes a lot of weeding through scam artists and bureacratic red
tape though! :)

Have fun at Coos Bay!

Wish you were here Robin. I have tinnitus so bad that sometimes the
screaming cicadas in my head drive me nuts. Dramatic hearing degradation
(big guns in the USN before hearing protection) and when two people talk, I
can't seem to understand either of them. VA says hearing is good, go
away. Needed my medical records, filled out the paperwork, sent it in
only to get a letter back saying some other Govt. org had checked out my
records. What? Who? (Not my business.) Finally, after 6 mos, my medical
records show up........for my first enlistment. What about the other 20
years? Somebody needs to do some house cleaning in the organization and
soon. I feel so bad for returning vets having to deal with this
bureaucracy.

Steve,
The VA say that they can hear what you hear when they give the test, but
they use procedures that don't reflect what your real problem is.
They use a deep male voice, not a woman's. It is extremely quiet in the test
chamber. When they give you the comprehension test, they use a deep male
voice, absolutely quiet and the phrases are easy to understand. They never
test you with multiple voices, background noise. They also say that they
can detect the ringing in your ears. I also have a lot, but they said I had
none.
If you can't find some Navy Physical record or a sick call visit that shows
that a hearing loss occurred while you were in the Navy, they won't give you
a disability for that. I think that you can get free hearing aids from them,
my neighbor has them from the VA.
Like you, during my 22 years in the Navy I was exposed to a lot of excessive
noise. I spent over 6,000 hours, between two of those big round engines,
but my flight status and Navy career was dependent on passing that flight
physical each year, so my hearing loss was never reported in the records.
Hearing experts say that our ability to hear, is dependent on the large
number of fine hairs in the inner ear, they disappear as we get older, but
when you lose them from the excessive noise we experienced while young,
there are not enough left to hear well.
You probably have COPD too, all that asbestos on the ships and all the
smoking in confined spaces. Remember also that if you were ever on the
ground in Vietnam, they will give you an automatic disability for Agent
Orange.
The state has VA Service officers that are supposed to be on your side, and
the DAV says they have people who can help also.
You can get your entire Navy physical record, but I didn't get all of them
through the military service record system. A lot of the records from sick
bay didn't get through, but most of my flight physicals did.
Good luck on your future efforts, keep trying.
