Matt Colie's trip log and complaint about tolls triggered me to look at this. Last year, I traveled across NY state on the turn pike and paid over $100 in tolls. I was paying the same as commercial 40,000 lb trucks.
Others might already know but this is new to me. E-ZPass has a form that allows motorhomes to get the auto rate for the number of axles in NY. It essentially removes the "high" distinction and cuts your tolls in half!
http://www.thruway.ny.gov/ezpass/ta-w68176.pdf
E-ZPass for other states are not as generous, but usually do provide a discounted rate for RV's and separates them from the cash rate for commercial vehicles.

Mike
I am no stranger to tolls in the North East..in fact I think I keep the
economy running.
I pay a toll in Nova Scotia, 3 or 4 in Maine, 1 in New Hampshire, 1 in
Mass. and another in NY state...and this is all before I get rolling on
route to the Southwest.
That form may help...thank you

Mike,
In your case, if you are going across NY, don't take the NYThruway, take the Southern Tier. It is actually marked on some charts, but it us I-86 to SR-17 to I-88 takes you to Albany (Aubny to the locals). It is often faster and may be a little longer, but as you said, it is about 100$ cheaper.
While I was working near Chicago (why doesn't everybody go to Chicago for the winter?) I had an E-ZPass. Was great while I used it, but shortly after that job ended, I realized that I was being charged an "In Activity Fee". It was 1 or 2$ a month, but for as much as I needed it (not at all) it was a lot.
I am told that some state will issue an E-ZPass without that or other costs when not used. I have not been able to locate that state. If someone knows where it is, I would like to hear about it.

I looked around and it appeared Ohio was one of the cheapest on the
activity fee... $0.75 per month. One NY or PA toll in the RV would pay for
the annual fee. Plus the convenience of not having to carry cash and
contort yourself out that stupid little drivers window.... of all the good
engineering that went into the GMC, that window should have got someone
banned from vehicle design.

I-Pass from IL has no inactivity fee. We will be more regularly traveling
from Michigan to Wisconsin in the future, either with the GMC or Wife's
car. After making the trip through Chicago at the wrong time, once too
often, I broke down and joined the toll paying public.
Now if we could only use it to get half price on a certain bridge...

I have a Florida E-Z pass transponder that only gets used for 4 winter months. There aren't any charges for the other 8.

Keep talking guys, it's beginning to sound better...just don't use the
'convenience' card ! <g>
I would and have walked back almost a mile to get $ .25 that I was
overcharged at a toll booth. (The second GMC was charges less, I was told
on the CB and pulled over and walked back for my coin)
It's a matter of principle !

I just read the Maryland terms and conditions... There are no monthly fees
if you pay two Maryland tolls during the previous month. If you do not pay
tolls in the previous month, the maintenance fee is $1.50.

My solution is not to visit any area where a toll is charged. If you charge me a toll then you probably do not want my travel and tourist business. One exception was when I paid a toll at the Sarnia/ Port Huron (Michigan / Ontario) bridge.

Ooops, confused the two smallish eastern states. I looked up Maryland,
you were talking about Mass. You are right.
Found a good summary of charges and reciprocal discounts on wikipedia.
Seems pretty current:
