I can highly recommend Johnny Franklins Mufflers, 1340 Santa Rosa Ave., 707-546-7751, in Santa Rosa, CA. Frank, the owner, owned a GMC and has installed headers and exhaust systems on several of them. Bob, his son, guided the process of installing my headers, mufflers and pipes, and their skilled staff dealt with several problems created by a PO which I'm glad I didn't have to handle in my garage. Thanks also to Jim K for having Thorley headers in stock for us!

Jack,

Did you go with dual mufflers, as stock, a 2 to 1 muffler like Arch did, or the rear muffler like Jim sells?

When you have a muffler shop bend mufflers. it can be cheap, but the
restriction at the bends uses up most of the gain of the headers.
That is why our pipes are Mandrel bent and has no kinks like the muffler
shop jobs.
Nothing wrong with a standard, but one does not gain any performance or
mileage.

I went with the original configuration. I had two excellent Flomaster mufflers that I wanted to keep. Bob told me it would be noisier with the headers and suggested I might want to change them, but I decided to try it out. It's definitely noisier with the headers and I might take Bob's advice and change the mufflers.

Jack, we have headers. I paid a guy to put new flo masters on. Loud and caught my 74 floor on fire at top of Cajon Pass. Had Jim k do the 3 inch and one muffler in rear, with the shield on top of muffler. Really quietened down on inside. Sure, it is louder outside but who cares. It's good to hear about folks working on exhaust. Many dont realize what problems might occur because of older exhaust, at least I didn't.

That is old wife's tale that the unit is going to be louder with headers.
It might sound louder because of the pulse.
Also that the headers will cause the engine compartment to be much warmer.
All or the headers we supply all the GMC vendors originate from here and
they all have ceramic coating.
Spreading false information is whats happening.

If it’s louder out the tailpipe how about adding a small resonator at the back of the coach. If it’s louder at the engine, well...

Larry,
Most people have the shorter mufflers that are loud.
Our kit with duel mufflers are quiet.
Our single rear muffler is little loud, but only at the tail pipe.
Inside is quiet as these mufflers we use are heavy gage metal and do not
Drum like the lesser units.
Reps from the muffler co. tell us that more volume a muffler has, quieter
it will be.

My 23' coach came with a set installed. I've had zero problems with them. Sound nice, but not loud.
