A PO has painted the grill and headlight trim flat black, and done a horrible job; maybe applied it with a brush.

I'd like to strip them and repaint. I've read brake fluid is a great stripper, but you can have real issues getting paint to stick afterwards, and bubbling paint where the brake fluid is entrapped in pores, etc.

Any products that have been used successfully?

Thanks!

Try sandpaper or steel wool.

You do not want to use any chemicals on the headlight benzels or the grill to remove the paint as you can damage both. As Emery has posted the use of a fine abrasive and a little elbow grease is the safest way to prepare the pieces.

If you are in and out quickly you can use lacquer thinner. You will have to sand it after buy sanding after will be easier than trying to remove the old paint with sanding. Do not let the solvent puddle anywhere for long as it will soften the abs plastic.

I may try Superclean. Looks to work fairly easily and not have adhesion issues associated with brake fluid.

I use Superclean for my tough cleaning jobs and yes it is strong. Letting the entire grill soak in the stuff would definitely work. I sprayed my cabinets in my Eleganza and it took the old varnish off down to bare wood. Superclean is available at your local Wally world. I had to sand my grill before repainting it.

if they didn't sand the plastic before painting it and it's thick paint.

Sometimes a power washer will take it off with out damaging plastic.

But it it's embedded into plastic nothing will cleanly take it of without damaging it a bit.

Also Orange Citrus Paint remover will do it without hurting plastic.
