G'day,
After a leisurely breakfast I got out the Ford 10 ton bottle jacks and positioned them under the lower control arms so I could lift
the front end up and keep the axle shafts in the correct orientation to see if they were running true. Got both wheels up off the
ground about an inch or so and had Helen fire up the engine, apply the brakes and put it in Drive. Had her slowly release the brake
and checked the driver side wheel / tire - running true then checked the CV joint / axle - running true. Walked around to the
passenger side and problem was glaringly evident - I could see the tire OD was not running true, it seemed to have a section about
12 inches long that moved up about an inch or so. Obviously something had failed internally! To make sure it wasn't something else
as well I checked the wheel run out - true. I also checked the CV joint and axle - running true also. Had Helen apply the brakes and
shut down the engine.
Spun the passenger tire around until the lumpy bit was at 12:00 and I noticed that the tread was not flat it was rounded from the
outside to the inside of the tire. Checked the tires date code (03/07) so it was made the third week of 2007 making it 6 years and
30 weeks old. IIRC I purchased this tire as a spare in 2009 and it has been on the back of Double Trouble under a fiberglass cover
since then. It provided one day of service and 215 miles! Hopefully I can get some money back from Kumho.
I called Progressive Insurance and they sent out a guy to change the tire, I was amazed that the guy showed up in less than 30
minutes and he had to make a stop at his shop to pickup a floor jack. The reason he needed the floor jack was so that we could slip
the bumper hitch cargo carrier with the air conditioner in it out and far enough away from the spare to be able to remove it.
We R&R the tire so that's that.
There are no Discount Tire dealers in LA or MS so I ordered a replacement tire to be shipped to Robin Hood's home and we can take it
to have it mounted there.
We're spending another night here in Lafayette then it's off to New Orleans through New Iberia along Plantation Alley.
At the end of the day we were lucky; it was the tire and not something more difficult to deal with, the tire did not self destruct
and cause an accident or damage the coach. This is the first time we've suffered a tire problem since we've owned Double Trouble,
cross your fingers that we don't have another one until we get to Jackson and get a spare!
Regards,
Rob M.
