Is it possible to modify a GMC motorhome to make it a toy hauler? I talked
to a mechanic about doing this and he thought he could do it. I am concerned
about exceeding the GVWR. There doesn't seem to be much weight capacity and
I am worried about weight distribution>
Has anyone tried it?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. I would like to try it if it can be done
safely.
Thanks,
Mark

What kind of toy do you have in mind? I'm going to be converting my parts coach into a car hauler. Without most the interior, the loaded weight should be about the same.

Kerry, I have a CanAm Roadster that I wanted to take with me. I have been
camping in a trailer but don't like towing. I thought this would give me a
vehicle to use once I get where I am going.
What are you planning to carry? I wouldn't mind toting a Smart Car or
something of that size. It only weighs 1800 lbs. The bike weighs 1000. It
would fit in the back between the wheels if I backed it in.

Because I can't fit within the wheel wells, I'll have to have a sloping ramp inside the body that will go from the back of the floor over the wheel well area.

It's a 300 hp inline Chevy 6 with a T5 manual on Corvette C4 suspension front and rear. Weighs about 2100lbs empty.

just to split a few hairs - the Can Am racing series of the '70s (that has no connection with the newish tri-motorcycle company) was created for the fantastic SCCA group 7 sports racers, not roadsters. "Roadster" usually applies to front-engined race cars up to the late "60s, such as the front-engined Indy cars of the past.

I keep meaning to take a picture. I have a friend with a race car hauler GMC. The back opens up, and he moved the whole rear wheel/bogie assembly out to the outside of the lines of the body, so his formula type car rolled right in.

I'd love to see a photo also. US DOT limits width to 102" and change. If I remember the measurements, the outside rear tires are nearly 100" already.
