Awning questions from a new owner. Are passenger side and driver side Zip Dee awnings interchangeable?
Where can I get one? Pacific Northwest preferred but not necessary. Thanks. Harper

not sure about 23 footers.... but I think the rule applies:

you can buy zip dee's from Jims, or maybe even direct, but I doubt the price is much different.

the zip dees will all ship direct from chicago.

on 26 foot models, you have a "patio awning" that would fit either side.

but most people will install a "patio awning" on just the passenger side, and install "window awning" on the driver side.

not a huge want for a large awning on both sides, but I have seen it done. (Jim bounds's Larry). and I think one or two others i have seen as well.

the "window" awnings shade just the windows and are shorter in length. and shorter arms. from what i know about zip dees, the basic design and operation is the same.

used one's are hard to find.

I have one of each length Zip Dee awnings on my coach (patio length on the left, window length on the right), and would add one fairly significant difference... the window length awning takes only a few seconds to deploy, while the patio side takes a couple people a couple minutes. Not a huge deal, but you'll be a lot more likely to pull out the window length awning than going through the patio length awning deployment twice (IMHO, maybe others aren't as lazy as I am). Wink

Welcome to our group. You have found the spot for most any help you might need. As the others have mentioned Jim at AppliedGMC.com has anything we can think of for these old coaches. If he doesn't he can probably get it.
I had no clue this group was here when we bought our coach. Nor did I realize that most anything can be bought new from applied. Hope you have someone near by you that owns a coach. Check out the above mentioned Black List, which is a map of owners across the US, Canada, and other countries.
Glad you found us.

Jim,

Since you're answering emails on Sunday...

I want the awning that Ken Henderson has on his 23' Birch for mine too. What
do they call it - armless? Can you supply these or anything like it?

Awesome Jim, Thanks.

I love the looks of Ken's coach without the arms disturbing the beautiful

Last time Manny T, Steve F, and a person from British Colombia acquired
them.
Carefree of Colorado has a similar one in their line up with an power
option to articulate the unit. Noticed that the have legs that fold down
once extended.
Steve F had an issue with the sudden burst of wind.
Since all the load is at the one area, mounting it for windy weather
becomes challenging.

That Carefree Freedom Roof Mount does indeed look close enough to the
Omnistor to be a suitable substitute. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if
Carefree buys the hardware from Omnistor. I'd want to see the mounting
hardware before committing to one, however. The Omnistor uses a full
length aluminum extrusion, roof curvature dependent, to attach to the roof,
with only a couple of screws needed to secure the two together. From the
description, that design may have overcome my only objection to the
Omnistor -- before the legs are extended, the awning extends out too nearly
vertical. Not a big problem, but sort of disconcerting to see the thing
hanging down 60*.

As for the wind, my first action after extending ANY awning is to put a
strong rope at each outboard corner, attached to, at least, auger anchors
at 45*/45*/45*. We've been trapped in 70 mph winds with an awning (not the
Omnistor) deployed -- with no damage.

By the way, I was with Richard Floyd last week -- he's not interested in
ordering any more Omnistors.

Ken,
In my catalog, They have few mountings, If you don't mind I will send you
what I have and also see what Carefree can do.
How far North are you and Elaine going?

Jim,

Sounds good. I looked at the on-line documentation and couldn't find the
mounting brackets.

We haven't really decided just how far we're going. We back tracked from
Sully's in Seattle to McChord AFB in Tacoma for the weekend so we could
re-group, do laundry and commissary shopping, etc. We have reservations
for the Boeing plant tour in Everett on Monday afternoon. Then 3 days
minimum at Whidbey Island NAS. We may decide to visit some of the San Juan
islands before proceeding. Considering how many mountains and forests I've
seen so far on this trip, I'm not sure I NEED to go on up into BC.

We will definitely be spending a few days in Richland, WA, where I have a
first cousin who's the closest I ever had to a brother. We'll leave there
about the 10th of September for a leisurely ride to Branson by the 17th.
We may leave earlier if we think of stops we'd like to make enroute.

When do you plan to reach Branson?

Ken

Ken, there are several GMC owners in the Kennewick, Richland, Pasco,
Benton City area. Ron and Patty Smith are GMC Cascaders, Ron is past
president. If you guys want company, I can scare some of them up when you
pass through. Let me know.

Carl,

I like that one too. It seems quite stout. Even though it's OEM only, I have
a hunch that Jim could get them for us. I would like to see one installed or
at least in position before ordering. Hey, why don't you get that thing
installed and I'll buy you lunch! Hahaha

Carl,

I don't think that profile is as teardrop shaped as the Carefree Freedom
Roof Mount's and won't match the contour of the GMC's roof as well. Also,
there's the little problem of them offering it only for OEM's. BUT, it
probably does overcome the major problem I just realized for the Freedom:
a maximum length of 13'!!!

Maybe someone can make a deal with them, like Richard Floyd did for the
Omnistor, to do something exclusively for GMCers.

Ken H.
