Don't believe a fully auto Beetle was ever released in the USA. There was an "Auto-stick". Basically a manual transmission with a hydraulic and vaccum operated clutch)

Type 3 VW (Squareback, Fastback and Notchback)as well as the later baywindow buses were offered with auto.

Any of the above can be flat towed "4 down"

Battery disconnected, ignition on (steering unlocked), in neutral

Checking Remco usually gives an indication of restrictions or conditions,
if any, exist for a particular vehicle.

Enter the Year, Make, etc.

Nice but it doesn't let you select anything older than 1996.

Yikes! It has the 1996 Impala as only a 6 cyl. Wrong - not even an option...

That website tells me that they do not have any information on a 2005 Beetle.

I would imagine that the 5 speed Manual Trans could be towed, just do not know enuf.

I pulled a 2004, 2006 and now a 2013 new Beetle. All were standard transmission. Here is my experience: The base plate for the 2004 broke at the point of attachment to the car. Don't know if the 2005 uses the same baseplate or not. But if it does I would be very careful. In 2006, the base plate was changed and my 2006 was an excellent Toad. I pulled it all over the country. The only thing you had to do was turn the ignition key back one stop to free up the steering wheel without turning the ignition on. I just got the 2013 and had to visit Blue Ox in Pender, NE because the base plate for the 2012 didn't fit. But now because mine was used as a model, the 2013 base plate is available. There was another problem I had to overcome, however. The ignition is now electronic, there is no key and so when you free up the steering wheel you have the ignition on. If you pull all day, your Beetle battery will be dead!! I ran a wire from the coach ignition to the Beetle battery to counteract the drain. I have pulled the VW over 2000 miles so far without any problem. But you must pull a standard transmission. I was told you cannot get into an automatic transmission to attach a Remco pump.

Looks like Bob has the beetle towing well covered.

I'll only add that if all else fails for an Auto Trans, disconnecting the
driveshaft would work. Far an ideal option of course, but for some is a
better option than a dolly or trailer.

Only slightly better may be installing a drive shaft disconnect coupling
like this <http://www.swdriveline.com/>. Looking at $1200 +/- for the parts
and install if I remember correctly.

My 40k mi 2005 Auto Trans Xterra is well paid for, but is said to not be
towable 4 down....unless one of the above options is used. FWIW, I'm
looking to swap it for a 2600lb 35mpg towable rather than tow a 4400 lbs
18mpg SUV.

The only problem being that the VW New Beetle (and the Jetta and Golf, which share the same configuration) have drive AXLES. So unless you're willing to do a whole lotta work every time you want to go to the store for a quart of milk, you're not gonna be dropping CV axles.

FWIW, it would go like this:
Jack up front of car
Remove front wheels
Remove axle nuts
Remove anti-sway link bolt
Remove ball joint bolts and retainer
Remove eight allen bolts WAY up in there (particularly on the right side)
Pull/tug/swing the brake disc/hub unit out until you can clear the "nose" of the CV axles
Pull the CV axles out
Bolt the ball joints back to the lower control arm
Replace the anti-sway link bolt
Tow

I'd say you could get really good at this and do it in an hour, but you should also replace the 16 allen bolts that hold on the inner portion of the CV axles every couple cycles, and (for me at least) keeping the CV boots from bunching up can be a real pain.

This is all to say "it's not likely that anyone would actually do it"... Wink
