I'm stepping away from my rotary dial cell phone and have purchased one to
use on the road for WiFi. I'm tired of sketchy connections provided by RV
parks and do not like Mickey D's. What is the biggest bang for the least
buck out there. Our local mall is loaded with hawkers from every carrier
and I'd just a soon not get attacked without arming myself with some
knowledge. Non Pic email and WiFi only. Not interested in much else,
well,,,,,,maybe GPS.

Steve,
I think the most important thing here is cell coverage. If you don't have cell phone service, you don't have internet. From what I can tell and have heard, the best network is Verizon.

Steven,
A - Join the club with the shaky Park RV and Micky D's....
B - There are many choices, but none are cheap. Possibly the least expensive over all is the Verizon plans (I am not solid on these) for a hot-spot box that you can either turn-off when not needed or pay-as-you-go for band width. I know these exist, but know little else about them.
C - The possibly least convenient choice would be either one of the boxes that make a hot-spot and leave it alive or get a smart phone and either tether with cable or Wifi. The only advantage of a smart phone is that you would have it, so you pay for the data line if you get one and then you can buy the program that makes a tether work (buy it once) and then you only pay if you exceed the plan band width.

I've been with Verizon since before they were Verizon and agree they have the best converage...period.
Both the wife's smart phone and mine have Mobile Hotspot capability built in. No additional monthly charge. Any data used by my laptop goes against my monthly contract. I barely have a 3G signal inside my house so I haven't tried it yet but during a call to the helpless desk this week, I asked about it and was told that basically I turn it on in the phone, set up the password and my laptop will find it just like any other wifi. Select the network, enter the password and it's on. No data used while idle...only when the laptop is online.
Verizon has a thing called a Jetpack that is basically a black box that does WIFI over the cell. It has it's own bandwidth that is priced based on what you want.
We're only looking at browsing forums and reading email and have way more data than we'll ever use so we're going with the mobile hotspot for now.
keep in mind this is all hearsay. I haven't actually done it yet.

I took our sales rep into Verizon (we both use them). He got a 4G box
that shared the 2gb/month on his phone. The box cost $20 and it was
$20/month. I got grandfathered in with tethering and unlimited data so I
don't need such a gizmo. The part that bites is that if I upgrade my
phone to a 4G one, I lose both perks. Rat bastards...

Hi Steve,
Take a look at Page Plus.
No contract, 3G on Verison towers, same coverage as Verison.
I have used them for years, you can even get them on the phone for help.
I average about $12 a month for voice only, about 300 min. a month on the
$80 plan
good for a year or until you use the minutes at $.04/ min.
Just got my wife an I phone I am trying her on a $12/ mo. plan with 250
min.(she presently averages 15 min. a month) 250 text
and 10 meg. data with $.10/ meg. overage charge, if I can keep her on wifi
mostly, it may
work out to less than $25/mo. otherwise I will go to the $30 plan with 500
meg and $.05 meg overage.
They have a $55 plan with 2 GB and a $70 plan with 5 GB

Steve,
I've been very happy with Millenicom.com's Hotspot plan: $99 for a
Verizon-labeled 4620LE Jetpack supporting up to 10 Wi-Fi users. $69.99 per
month for 20GB. Uses the Verizon network, but you never deal with Verizon
(and cannot). No contract but $15 reconnect fee if you drop off.
They also offer a BYOD plan with unlimited data. Caution: NOT Verizon
network!
When I get home, I may drop my DSL.

Steve,
While T Mobile may not be the best solution for you because of their
coverage area over the USA, they have a military discount that applies to
the total bill each month. I get 2 phones for less than $90.00. One with
4G and cell phone capability and the other with text messaging and cell
phone capability. I'm currently trying to get my laptop (Win 8) to tether to
my 4g phone, Galaxy S2, without paying that extra $20/month using the PDAnet
app that I bought.
At home I use an Ooma phone hooked up to Cox high speed internet, it rings
what used to be my house phone system and my cell phone simultaneously,
never have to reset it when I'm not home.

Steve,
I think Dan is using the same thing I do.
I use a Verizon UML 290 USB modem with a remote antennae which I just attached to the center section of my batwing Winegard antennae
so it winds up three feet off the roof.
I get up to 4 LTE speeds depending on where I am.
It's $50 per month.

Rob M.

Steve, we are now using Verizon jet pack. 5 gig per mo. 50 bux. Has an external antenna plug and we have an antenna on roof of GMC.
Most of time we need no antenna. Our phone carrier is AT&T. Both of us have iPhones with wifi. We can connect the phones and laptops
to the jet pack. Have no data plans on our AT&T phones. This what now works best for us. Always have Internet. I have a little case
for the jet pack with a clip. I just clip it to my belt and off I go. Different things work best for different needs. This jet pack
serves as our home wifi also.
