I know this is possible.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to do it. He skipped straight from pulling
the balancer to cover off, motor mount removed.

Another gallery mentioned jacking up the engine by putting the jack under
the final drive, but did not show how this was done,

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Patrick,

I actually did it wrong! Rolling Eyes I jacked the engine up with a block of 2 X 4 under the oil pan. It DID put a permanent dent in it, but somehow does NOT rub on the crankshaft (phew!). If I were to do it over again, I would rig up a support above the engine by bolting a chain to the front intake manifold manifold bolts and suspending the engine from the chain with a come along or something like that.

I would guess jacking the engine up by the final drive would work too. You just need to take the weight off the mount.

When I did mine I used two jack stands on the inside, one on each side of engine cover. I raised them and secured them . I put a metal pipe across them. them i used 2 heavy straps with the rachets, one one each side. for the life of me I can not remember how i attached straps, i am thinking i rapped each one around head, but brain fart.
I would ratchet each side equally once motor mount bolts were off.
I do remember me taking a 4 to 6 hour job and making it a all weekend thing. But I do know it was done correctly and with good parts. I removed a chain that looked fairly new, but single not double.
I was surprised to find that based on timing light that timing was in spec once it was back together.

Did mine last year. Jacked it up by the front drive just enough to get the front mount off then set it down on wood blocks while I worked on it.

Well!
Paul, that looks like an idea worth stealing! Hopefully with enough
planning, and a few more ideas like that, I can avoid the situation brian
described. I want to expedite, though of course without sacrificing
quality...


Did mine last year. Jacked it up by the front drive just enough to get the
front mount off then set it down on wood blocks while I worked on it.

This is the jig that you need to make up to support the engine when lifting the motor. Used hardwood lumber, this fits on either side of the pan.

Been used on several motors to support the motor. You should not lift your engine by jacking on the bottom of the oil pan as you can and some have done, cause the crank to hit the pan.

So, resurrecting this thread, since I am getting ready to do te deed.

I'm wondering where I can source the oil slinger, and what sorts of gotchas
there are when sourcing the more standard parts from the local parts store.
Any tips you got would be great...
