Since the topic on my Onan woes seems to be drifting I thought I'd start a new one on the question of synthetic vs non-synthetic oils and either's propensity to leak.

The late Bill Telgen switched to Amsoil products at some point in my coach's life. When I changed oil I went to a synthetic product. In neither case have I had an oil leak from the engine.

I haven't put mega miles on the coach, but so far the oil usage is minimal (except for the Onan) and I can't see a difference in the two.

I'm not really sure what Amsoil is, but it sure makes a mess when you get it on your hands or head.

Comments?

I only use Amsoil in my fleet of 6. Change it 1x year, with an Amsoil filter. Use it in the engine, transmission, and differential. Had a head gasket fail in the '98 Venture and made the repair/replace decision easier. Daughter ran the cub cadet tractor w/o oil (failed to replace the oil fill cap)5 years ago and we still use the tractor with no internal repairs.

Amsoil is a true synthetic, it is "built" from natural gas feedstock, not cracked from larger molecules.

If you "convert" an engine from dino oil, it should be flushed with Amsoil flush or change the oil earlier than normal.

I have not had seals leak from converting to Amsoil. I have converted new vehicles with the first oil change, and in the case of the '98 venture, it had 125K miles on it at conversion.

The Cub Cadet engine save ($1200) and the '98 Silverado cold start knock converted me to Amsoil, forever. Yes there are cheaper oils.
Oats that have been through the horse always cost less.
