As many of you know (or have experienced!) the Onan field-coil assemblies seem to be failing at an increasing rate over the past couple of years. Here at the "Miller Compound" we have spent a couple months working on various ways to repair and improve these assemblies.
As of today we have been successful at:
1) re-winding the assembly using copper wire which is mechanically stronger and also has an improved insulation coating compared to the OEM's varnished aluminum
2) keeping the re-wound assembly within the OEM electrical specs so that the original reactor/bridge excitation system can be used
3) eliminating the reactor/bridge excitation system and replacing it with an electronic regulator that has both under/over-voltage and under/over-frequency protection as well as tighter command of output voltage.
I have posted pictures of our project at:

We would like to thank all of those in the GMC community who have assisted us in this project.
