Appie, Bob and I bought our '73 Painted Desert at the end of January '05,
he worked to make it mechanically sound until the end of June. We left
home July 1, 2005, driving to Alaska. We saw and experienced many new
things; our daughter, son-in-law and grandaughter flew to Anchorage and
toured with us, staying in their tent, which we took with us from Texas.
At the end of the week we drove up in front of the UPS store in our GMC
where they bought a box, packed their tent and shipped it home . We then
dropped them off at the airport for their flight home. Made some wonderful
memories. No prob!

A week or so later, my sister and her husband flew to Anchorage and we
toured with them for a week, including a flight to Kodiak, where his nephew
took us for a full day of fishing which included him cooking one of the
halibuts we caught for us (but not my sister's 87 pounder!). My sister
said she had never been sightseeing from her bed before. No prob! We
dropped them off at the airport in Anchorage and we headed for Fairbanks.

I had seen a sign advertising a bluegrass festival along the way. We saw
the sign as we were driving along, Bob turned and we went to the festival
where the locals were very friendly so we decided to spend the night there.

At the festival we spent most of the afternoon with a couple from
Fairbanks. He told us to call when we got to Fairbanks and he'd take us
flying in his plane. He called us, picked us up in his vehicle, flew us
around Fairbanks, and said "I'll be back to pick you up at 5:00 pm for
dinner at our house", a 600 sq ft log cabin where all water is delivered by
truck. Dinner was baked halibut. Fantastic day! Wonderful people! No
prob!

The day we left Fairbanks for the boogie back to Texas, we stopped for a
cup of coffee at a combo station, restaurant, and bar. I ordered a coffee
and Bob was walking around. This old codger dressed in overalls came in
and ordered coffee, too; so we visited. He proudly told me he was going
home after his third fishing trip of the summer to Copper River. Said he
had a freezer full of salmon filets in his truck bed, would we like some
salmon... I said "that would be great". We were visiting more when Bob
came in and said "let's go!"--as usual, he was ready right then, so I
thought, "how to I graciously get my fish"; so I slowly got off my stool
and the old codger said, "Wait, you have to get your fish". As we walked
out, he asked, "Do you have a plastic bag?" I said I sure do; so he put
two nice fresh Copper River salmon filets in my bag. Thanking him
profusely, we got in The Roadhouse and headed south. No prob!

Backed into an RV space at a native american RV Park at Williams Lake.
Next morning, no go. Bob discovered the gear shifter cable had broken.
Had to spend another night so that Canadian Tire mechanics could check us
out. There was no replacement cable available anywhere, but Bob could
manually put the coach in drive, so off we went toward home. A little
prob!

We just made sure we could always go forward--not reverse. Did just fine
until my navigating created a slight problem. We kept climbing, Bob
couldn't down shift, 18-wheelers way up above us kept going around another
steep curve, Bob kept asking how much further, and I finally saw the pass
symbol and Monarch Pass on the map... No turning back; and we would have
to go down the other side... No prob! Bob did a great job and made it
safely to the bottom. Stopped by Lanny Young's place in TX to pick up the
new gear shifter cable he had ordered for us. Made it home just fine. No
prob!!!

Since then we have attended a number of GMC rallies and have driven back to
AK once. In 2011 we drove through the East Coast, New England, the
Canadian Maritimes, back by Niagra Falls and home safely with only minor
probs (bent push rods early and loss of brakes going across the bridge from
CA to the US at Port Huron, MI) that Bob could repair himself with a little
help from our GMC friends.

LOTS!!! of happy travels for us.
