The best may be Trojan 6 volts. I only have 4 but I get them from SAMs club. Maintain them and I have had great results.

Oops. My bad.

Early models had a third battery dedicated to the genset. That's what I thought you were talking about.

For a later model GMC get the biggest AmpHour number that will fit in the space. Compromise for budget only if you have to.

Some folks here say there is no benefit to a deep cycle battery in this application.

YMMV

I use a small lawn mower battery for the onan. Works great with a combiner on it.

That's what I have on the 73 CanyonLands (but no combiner). Will likely do the same when I restore the Onan to its compartment in the 73 Sequoia.

I understand later models put the house battery in the back and used it to start the Onan, eliminating the lawnmower battery.

Don't know if BRDRVR has older models, newer models, or a mix of both.

The truck batteries are not "deep discharge" batteries. If they are taken down below about 50% capacity they begin to loose capacity. You are much better off replacing those batteries with two six volt golf cart batteries in series. They can be totally discharged and then charged back up and last a lot longer.

For your engine starting battery use a standard 12 volt automotive type battery. It doesn't have to be a large truck one.

David, I only post pics to the photo site and use a link here. Have taken no pics with my iPhone or iPad. I like my digital camera.
Use the combiner on Onan starting battery to keep it from discharging with house batteries. When I bought it there was a marine 12 back there. When it died I started looking at scooter and lawn mowner bats to save room and keep wiring simple. Works for me.

David, I am on the 6th year for two 6 volt Energizer 122 amp-hour/golf cart/Sam's Club house batteries... using the old buzz box charging system. The batteries are not showing any signs of weakness which is pretty surprising to me.

How often and for how long is the buzz box plugged in? Are you using a trickle charger to keep the charge topped off?

David,

You have gotten a lot of answers that all have some truth to them.

To sort things out.
If you want a gen-start battery buy the cheapest 12V battery you can find with terminals large enough to take the cables. The cranking power on an Onan is low to ridiculous. This only matters if the house bank is in the front and it still has a generator.

For house batteries, stay away from truck batteries. The gonzo-moma 4D and 8D are impressive, but the truck version are not deep cycle designs. Those can be had as deep cycle, but they are not common away from cruising sailors. The best is to go with pairs of 6V golf cart batteries. These are deep cycle. Trojans are as good as you can buy easily, but Rolls do seem to be better. If they are a better ROI, I am not at all sure. The golf cart batteries available at Sam's and Costco seem to be a good value. I have installed more than a few pairs of these including the two of my own.

If this coach starts the genset (APU) from the house bank, that is not even an issue with the whole picture.

Matt

Looks like the thread split and my reply went somewhere else in the forum...

I didn't leave the buzz box plugged in. Trickle charge just the last year or so from a cheap harbor freight one. Added water once a year and that is all that was needed. Just now switched to the Progressive Dynamics smart charger and am currently leaving it plugged in.
