Hi Everyone,
If I have ever needed this forum it is now! My father in law died today, & I have choked so bad … I don’t know what to do. I was gassing up In Yuma AZ on my way to Green Valley AZ 20 miles South of Tucson, AZ , and leaving I turned left too sharp and ran into the cement block that at the end of the pump island. I hit it about 1 foot in front of the rear two wheels Then dragged the wheels over it. I think the front rear wheel is toed (splg) in. I drove it a few miles down the road and the coach drifts to the left. Please see the links below to pics.
For those interested … When I found out about his passing my wife Julie and I loaded up my 78 Royale at home in Long Beach, CA and drove south to El Cajon, east of San Diego to pick up my brother-in-law. Then the three of us headed out Interstate 8 towards Green Valley. I may have to leave it here in Yuma, find a rental car then head to my mother-i n- law’s home. She is alone and really shouldn’t be right now. I would try to go on, but it is desolate between Yuma and Tucson, the next major city, and I hate to blow a tire or ???
I would appreciate advice.
Thanks,

Alan,

At the very least, if you have a spare with you, we would suggest putting
it on, just in case of core damage from hitting the concrete. Hard to tell
alot from your pictures as they come across on our computer way too big.
Would suggest putting the spare on the front rear (middle). Then you might
travel to the next rest stop up the road and check to see how warm the
wheel bearings (hubs) are in the back. If they don't seem to be warming up
any more than the other side, we would continue on the trip - albeit not at
70 mph.

Also observe the side to side tread wear of the two wheels on that side. Then drive it on your way and see what if anything happens to the tread wear pattern. From the pictures, I see nothing wrong but it would be better to see it in person.

Thanks Bert,
I really wanted to continue on & get to Green Valley, so I went to take a look & I noticed a hairline crack on both tires where they hit the concrete. The crack is long on the front tire, but the rear has a 4" hairline crack too and I think the cores have been compromised. I could put the spare on the front rear but I'm concerned that the rear one may be bad too ... and worried especially because of how desolate the drive is in the desert to Tucson. I'm now at a truck stop in Yuma off of interstate 8.

Thanks again.

There is a Discount Tire in Yuma: 928-344-4600, 820 E 32nd St. Take care
of your tire needs, make sure your spare is good and proceed to Green
Valley. When you get situated, please carefully inspect for damage. If
you have serious damage to the bogey arms, casting etc, I have a complete
assembled side with both arms, spindles etc. I will be in town for the
next week so give me a call and I can run it out to you. You will need to
get the coach off the ground and do the repairs. I'm about 60 miles from
Green Valley.

There is a truck tire repair station at the Love truck stop where I was at. It is open 24 hours so I got a hold of tire guy on duty and he looked at tires & said they should be ok & make it to Green Valley. I've driven 17 miles I checked & all hubs feel the same ... One does not feel any hotter than the rest and there's no wear I can see on the tires so ... I'm off again.

I am so sorry to hear of your father in law's passing. You are in our prayers.

From the looks of your pics, it does not appear that you did a lot of severe damage. As others have said, drive it, and stop to check things more often than you normally do. Wouldn't hurt to put the spare on that left front rear, and then have someone check the tire after you get to your relatives home. Wish I lived down there, I'd come now and help. But you do have Steve F very close, and he is the BEST around for when you need it.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I suspect you will be in Green Valley when you look at this thread again. The pics don't look like damage that would stop your travels. Maybe an alignment needles, along with a band aide. But that's it. Those cap covers are cheap compared to what could have happened. Lots of folks have done similar things. Hope your family is comforted in the loss of your father in law. Call Steve F before you head home.

Sorry for your loss. Glad to hear you're back on the road. Yuma is not a fun place to be this time of year. Two years ago my son and I flew to San Diego to pick up the 850Ci. The AC was not working. When we got to Yuma, a bank temp display showed 123*! Had to stop at Walmart there for freon and an AC filler hose. Took almost 4 cans, but at least we had AC after that. That is just brutal heat.

Thanks … we made it to Green Valley. My mother-in-law is with her children now. I would like to thank all of you who helped me through this ordeal.
As it stands … I do not think that it is as bad as I thought. I crunched the body in a couple of places, but maybe since the concrete first hit the body, it may have saved the suspension. I have never before in the 12 years I had her hit anything with the rear wheels, so I thought with how jarring the contact felt , that there must have been some major suspension damage. But it looks like my old Royale is tougher than I thought. It is over 260 miles from Yuma to Green Valley and the tires show no worse for wear. I also stopped a few times and all of the hubs and tires felt the same . .. fairly warm, but not too hot to touch at all. It also looked like the wheels were lined up pretty straight from looking at them continuously through the driver side rear view mirror.
I am of course still going to have it checked out. I left Steve Ferguson a voicemail message. I’d like him to take a look at it if at all possible since he so close and knows our coaches so well. We will be here for a few days and hopefully he’ll have time.
Well it is now 10:49am & I’ve been awake since 7:00am yesterday, so I’m going to get some rest. I tried to nap in my in-laws house, but the doorbell kept ringing. Friends & neighbors bringing food and helpful items over for mom. Sooo … I’m out in the GMC, with the A/C blasting. I’m sure glad that its here1

Thanks again for being there ... even in the middle of the night!

Alan,
You might want to get yourself an infrared thermometer. They come in very
handy especially when you want to take bearing temps. There is a Harbor
freight in southeast Tucson. I did buy mine at Home Depot.

I've been calling that number and leaving messages ... but it seems Steve doesn't get them because I haven't heard back from him. I cannot send a personal msg, & the site will not give me his email address.

Try bowtiemad55@gmail.com. That was Steve's email a couple of years ago.

I can't imagine that one low speed smack as you described would tweak the bogie at all.

I have dropped my rear wheels off the pavement and slammed it back up many times on trips into Baja. One trip I damaged an Alcoa Hot Shot. And I've cut short and hit the curb going into gas stations several times over 12 years. Haven't bent a bogie yet.

Relax as best you can in the situation you're in. Sorry for your family's loss.
When you get back to Cal have Miguel at MGMGMC check it out for you.
Good Luck

We just talked. Everything seems OK and he's headed back to CA this Sun.
Miguel is not far from him and I told Alan to check the lower part of the
propane and genset covers for black dust accumulation. If the tires are
out of align, that's the first place it shows up long before you can spot
irregular tire wear. There's a lot of play in those bogey arms and I bet
they moved enough to keep from getting bent. We'll find out.
