I have been using the GMC generator a lot lately at my storage unit and decided to go get some gas before I got down past a 1/4 tank. Normally I would have gone about 7 miles to gas up but the coach was running well and just decided to go into the next town another 8 miles. Got gas and was headed back home when the hunger pains hit. Stopped at a Fast Freddies restaurant for a steak burger. I had to park across the street as the parking lot wasn't big enough for the GMC. I crossed the pavement and as I stepped onto the parking lot there was this storm drain grate in front of me. As I stepped on the grate for some odd reason my right hand let loose of the keys to the GMC and kerplunk down into the drain they went.....out of sight. Something told me that this just wasn't your everyday storm drain as there was a ladder made from rebar along one side. I had a tape measure with me and measured how deep the water was where the keys dropped in. It was seven feet from the top of the grate to the mushy bottom with four feet of water. Home is 15 miles away, the wife is out of state and I don't have another set of keys with me. Since I was at Freedies I ordered my burger, and ate it in the GMC to try and figure out what I am going to do. I thought maybe I could hot wire the GMC and got my MM out and looked over the electrical drawing. After pulling out the connectors half way down the column it occurred to me that I still needed a key to unlock the steering column. Now I thought if I had a magnet I could try and fish for the keys. Lowes was just 1/2 mile back and I found a magnet and 10 foot plastic pipe for $5.20. Sales rep tried to get me to buy a sweeper with a magnet on it for $15.00. Got the magnet attached to the pole and on the second try I found the keys. Took the GMC back to the storage shed, went home, had a beer, and a good chuckle.

Bruce,
You did the right thing by finishing your burger than think thing through.
When I break down, I will take the time and sit back and have a snack and
it really helps.
Too bad I do not practice that when I expound on the net.

Now is the time to make a duplicate set and hide them in the GMC. You will find a GMC is difficult to get into if you do not have a key, without causing damage. No coat hangers need apply.
I remember talking to one GMC owner who found sets of keys in five different locations. I have a hidden spare pair, and at rallies, my wife wears a door key around her neck.

My wife is always snipping at me for my habit of always carrying two sets of keys; one set per front pocket.
Congrats on your "out of the box" thinking to effect a solution!

Great story and congratulations. I was not so lucky when I dropped a 1/4-20x1/2" bolt in the valley of my 455 while rebuilding it. Somehow it made its way down an oil drainback hole, past both the cam and the crank and ended up in the pan. Had to take the fan, water pump, harmonic balancer, motor mount and the timing cover off in order to fish it out from the front.

I Ty-Rap<tm> my spare somewhere under the vehicke where you have to crawl under and clip the Ty-Rap loose to get it. This kills the temptation to simply 'use the hidfden key' to get in the coach instead of going inside ymy house and getting the proper key and forgetting to put the hidden one back. If it's a bit of a hassle, I'm not tempted to use it normally, and a crook is less likely to find it or worry about cutting it loose to break in the coach.

A key in your wallet for the side door.
An ignition key in the coach somewhere that you remember.

Sliding a window open might not do the trick. However, it has been reported that my good friend Eric Tanner, managed to crawl in the sliding window (toll window). Someone also pushed a 6 year old through the window to retrieve the keys. I could not duplicate this event on a bet. I think that I may be a little larger than the toll window area. LOL
If necessary, you can open the toll window from the outside by cutting off the plastic buttons and knocking the lock out of the way. I did this once very late at night, used a fishing pole out of an awning crank and clothes hanger to hook the keys that I left on the floor. This was the point that I started to carry the hidden spare keys.
