With much talk here recently about coach values, I went back over the agreed value appraisals on our two GMC coaches, a 77 Clasco and a 78 Royale rear lounge with an all leather interior. The Clasco was done this year by JimB when we picked it up and the Royale was done by JimK seven or eight years ago. Even though they were done at very different times in the market and on different coasts, both show a remarkably similar pattern. I will use the Clasco as the example here.

There were four parts to that appraisal; a Core value ("the relative value of a coach in original condition, unrestored but drivable"), Mechanical features (upgrades to the drive train, wheels tires, etc. which increase the value over the core value), Exterior features (paint, AC, awnings, etc. over and above the core value), and Interior features ("convenience, style and new technologies"). The Core value was 17% of the total valuation, Mechanical 27%, Exterior 21.6% and Interior 34.5%.

I find this interesting because most of what we discuss here on the forum tends to pertain to the Core value and Mechanical features which together were only 45% of the total valuation. The exterior gets mentioned less often while the interior tends to be among the least discussed items here, yet together they represent more than half the total valuation - at least in terms of these two appraisals.

At the Coos Bay rally the first week in October Melissa Fisher is leading the team putting together the Getting the Most from the GMC Lifestyle seminar series. One portion of that series will be an "experts" forum on dealing with the Interior Features that alone represented over one third of the total value in these two appraisals. Should be eye opening and most educational for many new and older owners alike. Our ownership is undergoing a generational change that is unlike what occurs with most collector vehicles where interest dies off with the generation of owners who lusted after them when new. In the case of our GMC coaches, the next generation of new owners have a very different idea of what makes the interior "neat and contemporary" from those of us who are old enough to have lusted after these things when new.

While all the full hook up sites have been allocated, we still have lots of room in the immediately adjacent dry camping area. It is only a few steps away from the full hook up area and is the same distance to the vendors, the Yurt happy hour activities, and the ball room where the food and both seminar series will be presented. At this time of year in Coos Bay you will not need air conditioning and rarely will need your furnace so dry camping is not much of an inconvenience. There will be water and dump services available for you as well so come on over either for the whole rally or just for the weekend if you like. See you there!

Details and registration forms on the web sites of the three sponsoring clubs- GMC Western States, GMC Cascaders and GMC 49ers.

Jerry, as long as you are placing value on stuff, how about figuring the
odds of us winning enough money in the Casino to cover our fuel costs to
the rally. (Very Big Grin) Seriously folks, this rally is shaping up to be
one for the history books. If you can get there you probably ought to send
in your registration fees NOW.

Interesting observation and true. Within reason and generally speaking, there is somewhat an average ceiling where most owners go with the mechanical basics to have a safe, road-worthy and reliable coach. The values in that area are, however, a necessity to keep the coach on the road and usable. Certainly big $$ can be spent on an esoteric drive train but that is not common. So the core plus mechanical issues are where most of the action takes place just to be able to drive from A to B, thus the traffic on the GMCnet.

The interior & exterior upgrades fall in the second hierarchy of needs but separate the really outstanding coaches from the average but otherwise safe, road-worthy and reliable coaches. So again, IMHO, the ceiling for value is much more variable for the interior & exterior upgrades. Based on what I have seen, I assume the % value for your two coaches attributed to interior & exterior upgrades are higher than average.

PS: Hope to make it to Coos Bay. Got our reservation in & paid day one but now some mechanical glitches have delayed our interior & exterior refurbishments to the point we may have to cancel...hope not.

Yep, about the same as my trip to NW Nevada. Three hard days driving
each way. Almost psychotic by the end of it. Oh yes, about $2500 in gas
along the way.

Eric Tanner told me a very simple way to figure out your gas expense. Distance one way in miles equals the number of $1 bills needed to cover the round trip. Unfortunately, it works all too well.

Yeah. If I could line up five or six tower kicks out and back I could do it and even make a nickle or two. I doubt there's six in the couintry in two weeks currently though.
