I have a 1969 boat with a 165 HP chevrolet straight 6. I need to pull the head and me (an old man)with 3 ft breaker bar can not break most of the head bolts loose. Will using an air impact to loosen bolts cause any problems other than maybe snapping off bolts? This sight is the best info on mechanics it does not have young guys who think they know everything and give bad info.
I don't want to ruin this block used blocks are $1700.

Can't say that I'm an expert but I would use an impact to get them out. Not very long ago I used an impact to get the spark plugs out of a Toyota that I couldn't budge with a large breaker bar I was sweating each plug thinking it was helicoil time for sure.

an impact wrench is much better at getting stuck bolts out than a hand wrench.
It vibrates the heck out of the bolt and doesn't over stress it.
using a big wrench will more likely break something

An air wrench won't do any more damage than a long bar might do.
As far as ruining the block, not much chance there.
If a screw gets broken off and is protruding from the block, cover up the bores and deck and weld a nut on the end then do the torch and ATF trick to loosen it.
If a screw gets broke off flush with the block, find a shop with an EDM "Tap Destroyer" and let them get it out. Won't be cheap, but might be 200$us.
If the threads actually get ripped out (slim bet), then find a real machine shop and have them drill and Helicoil that hole. Do not let some mechanic do this by hand as these fasteners have to be VERY square to the deck face.

I have a 3/8" impact wrench that I like to use. I soak the bolt with Kroil, beat it both directions with the impact, and soak it again. I let it sit for a day and repeat the process again. It usually takes 3 to 5 days.
If after 5 days if that does not work I get out the 1/2" battery powered impact and try the same thing with that. I have not had to resort to the even stronger 1/2" air powered impact yet.

Larry,
I have pulled down many motors and sometimes it works best to set the
impact to "tighten" just enough to move the bolt, then back it out.
