Any great ideas to get the bars out of the lower A frames. And out of the pork chops. I've never had this problem before. They just pulled out before when I've done it on the other 78 Royale. And yes, the tension has been released from the bars. Bob Dunahugh

Bob, Spray the heck out of both ends with the penetrating oil of your
choice, heat with a heat gun, Wait, spray again, finally beat the crap out
of the lower control arm with a heavy soft face hammer. Be patient, some of
them are quite tight. I will trade you the one I am presently working on.
Stored in the Boat Basin for years on the Oregon Coast. EVERY FASTENER is
like you are having trouble with. Dirty rotten ratchafratcher!!!!

Bob, Spray the heck out of both ends with the penetrating oil of your
choice, Wait, heat with heat gun on control arm socket, beat the Crap out
of it with a heavy soft face dead blow hammer. The grease has turned into a
very hard material. Heat will soften it up and allow it to separate.

Bob: I use 2 big pipe wrenches apposed as handles to rock back and forth while I pull on them. A little diesel fuel poured in the sockets helps. A big hammer is last resort.

Bob --
Just be sure NOT to put the pipe wrenches on the torsion bars. If you nick the surface of the bars it can seriously weaken them and they might crack.
With torsion bars much of the strength when twisting in in the out layer of metal.

Glad you said that Emery,
and not me. Never put vice grips, channel locks or pipe wrenches on springs
or torsion bars yet, and have no plans to do so in the future. Some good
strap wrenches out there that should work O.K..

I had the same problem with my first PalmBeach. I ended up putting vise
grips on the torsion bars(bad idea) and than hitting the vice grips with a
hammer, slowly but surely they finally came out.

Would putting a few wraps of 220 grit sandpaper against torsion bar to
cushion the jaws of a vise grip work.

G'day,

1) Spray all the ends of the torsion bars with penetrating fluid.
2) Remove the rubber mounts that retain the cross member that the pork chops are in.
3) Put a 2 x 4 under one of the torsion bars where it enters the cross member.
4) Smack the exposed end of the 2 x 4 with a dead blow hammer while making sure the end up against the cross member is at the bottom
and the force is going into the horizontal section NOT the vertical section.
5) Keep smacking the end of the 2 x 4 until that torsion bar comes out of the pork chop
6) Move over to the other side and repeat steps 3) to 5).
7) When both torsion bars are out of the pork chops move them up / down - left / right - round and round - in the lower control arm
sockets pulling at the same time until they work themselves loose.

Regards,
Rob M.

Thanks to all. I've used a torch before on items with a penetrating oil. Not a heat gun. I ended up using a combo of all ideas. Worked well on the left. Next the right. I installed the off set A frame rubber bushings. What alignment specs should I use? I would think that stock, except for number of degrees of positive caster that can now be set because of radial tires. Then replacing the boot on the steering shaft. Pulling the tanks to replace tank rubber hoses with steel lines on top, and replace the fuel tank valve and all rubber hoses to and from the tanks. I took two weeks off on this project. Like to deliver this coach to Wis. next week end. I have to be near the end. As I'm running out of things to do to this coach. Bob Dunahugh OH NO. I forgot the laminate floor, granite counter top, and window wings.
