Hi All
I'll be trading my '97 BMW 850Ci for a '78 26' Royale next week. Its a dry, side bath model with the rear u-dinette. Has 40k on engine/trans, new F/R wheel bearings, upgraded to greaseable bearings up front, 4-bagger rear, new brake pads/shoes, new calipers & wheel cylinders all around. Diff was swapped to a 3.21, new shocks all around. Current owner said it has alloy wheels with 2yr old tires, wasn't sure if they are Alcoas or not, I'm assuming/hoping they are.
The one thing it doesn't have is a hitch. I've sent several emails to folks advertising on some of the GMC specific sites, but have not received any responses.
Are there any sources for a used thru-bumper hitch?
Hopefully it'll tow my boat, it will be really cool having a vintage RV towing a vintage 1978 Glastron/Carlson CV23 jet boat.

I know Blaine just made a new batch of these. He told me this is the last batch he intends to make. He has said this before but this time I think he is serious.
You can also get this same hitch through Jim K.
Both web sites are listed above.
Be careful if you go elsewhere. Some others make a similar one but they use the cheaper center tube and there is a lot of excess play when you insert the drawbar. Besides being noisy and putting a lot of extra wear on the drawbar pin, if you insert a carrier in there like I use for my motorcycles or bicycles it will droop and not hold the carried item out straight.
I carry a 500 pound motorcycle with carrier on mine and I do not even know it is back there.
Go to one of the two above suppliers for a quality through the bumper receiver type hitch.

I am in the process (slowly -- too many other things to do) of rebuilding a SportMaster Stingray eighteen foot tri-hull jet boat . It is a 1977 and has an Olds 455 engine.

Thanks everyone for the leads on hitches. I found an RV repair shop
locally whose owner has 2 GMCs, and worked for a Florida Olds dealer in
the 70's doing general repairs and warranty work on them. He'll fab a
receiver hitch for ~$300, a little more for a thru-bumper. I think
it'll be the best way to go since it'll be welded instead of bolted on.

I'm with Jim as far as the welded hitch. If the guy is good enough to build one that welds to the frame he should be good enough to build one you can bolt on. Much easier to remove/modify should the need or desire arise.

Never weld a hitch on a coach as there will be times one needs to remove it
or goto another style.
In my book anyone that will tell you that he can weld one on your coach is
not thinking.
We have cut off several of the welded and the welding was not very good.
We have a proven standard hitch that bolts on for $198.00.
I might have slipped off a boat from Japan on my behind, but know what is
good gor the GMC being 70 and having one since 1980.

WOW. Did someone actually attempt that install? Looks like the earlier M70 power plant.
The 850s are actually great cars if you can afford the upkeep; which isn't too bad if you have the skillset to do your own wrenching. I've spent about $2k on parts over the last 2yrs. Most of the things I've dealt with are due to a negligent previous owner. They're engineered very well, most of the work I've had to do isn't too bad. A few things were a total nightmare, but those are things that require attention every 125-150k miles. With that being said, it would be over $10k to have that work performed by a dealer service center.
A $90k+ car will require a bit more maintenance than a $9k Hyundai - conversely, it'll also put a much larger smile on your face! The M73 V12 doesn't really have a torque curve, its more a flat line. Just off idle to the 6200rpm redline she pulls like a freight train. Just as a comparison, my '05 Saab 93 Aero's 2.0L 4-banger with a Stage 2 tune makes 260hp, 285tq; I think the M73 makes that torque at idle, then jumps to 360. I will certainly miss it at times. I'm really looking forward to the GMC; hopefully I can get a hitch installed in the next couple weeks and do some boating and camping this year yet.

I lurk here at least 3 times a day, and have nothing to contribute, and along comes a BMW v12 post and with 2 of them in the garage, there isn’t much I have not done on them, (off topic in reality). They are just like any vehicle, run on spark, fuel and air. Some vehicles have it all packed in small and some have space. Take things apart a piece at a time, take pictures, and notes, and not misplace them (note: last is the hardest part of the process) .
One of the reasons I am looking forward to the GMC project for in my aging human body, the process of working upside down and twisted into little spaces is becoming less second nature and more of a chore, much less can’t see in there anymore like I used to. (GRIN)
Plus in my view, the GMC is like a canvas, with structure that is in place and 40 years of truck experience on thousands of vehicles that we can either use the collective expertise and improvements, or go crazy and plug in any darn thing we want. Being a line mechanic for Porsche in the 70-80’s, I like the collective expertise mode. While wrenching on racing cars, I had too much on the fly improvising, some worked and some did not.
Plus go try to purchase a 850 complete front end steering assembly for the price you can get darn near everything for the GMC and the latest mods, while someone has put it together as a package and willing to help. (not that there aren’t a great group of people like that in the 850 forums, they are a great group)
I will continue to lurk for probably the next season and gather as much info as I can, go meet and view some examples and get the pros and cons, and end up with a basically stock 26 ft Palm beach minus the dinette (just 2 of us and miniature schnauzer), and upgrade the electrical system to 2013 usage requirements and safety. Refrigerator to something less the 40yrs efficiency, and new AC to keep my sweet wife cool as we travel. Still think the way is to get one already upgraded and just drive it, but then have 2 of them, and just might need parts…. It is hell being a mechanic..too many choices.
Did someone try that install? I am thinking they tried to put it in a car. Silly to replace raw cubic inches (7.4 liter) for only 5 liters in a truck chassis.

Nice helicopter engine (when it leaked that BMW was developing a v12, BMW
claimed it was for a helicopter).
