Our old 40 year old AC unit has finally bit the dust. What have most of you been replacing your units with? We'd probably want to get one with a heat strip in it since our furnace is dead as well (and we most likely will not be replacing that... don't do enough "winter" dry camping to make it worth it)

Thanks!

Jared,
If you going to get a single unit I would suggest the Dometic 15000BTU Brisk Air, It can also support the heat strip option. It can get hot and humid in VA and a big single does work well. A 13500BTU might be a bit undersized. A word about heat strips. They are not thermostatic controlled and they take a long time to heat a cold coach! They are only 5000BTU whereas a furnace is 30000+BTU.

Camping world is offering an internet sale on this item for $786 which is about $150 off their list.

PPLL Motorhomes has some good deals also at about $610 + sh

AC's are not hard to install, it is a pain to get them on the roof safely, and the old one off with damaging the coach.

I am sure they may be other deals out there, you will just have to look.

Thanks John!  We actually use a plug in ceramic heater when we are hooked into shore power for those "colder" nights.  It's done a great job and doesn't really take much to warm the coach up. Combine that with an electric blanket, 2 dogs and a wife and you almost have to bust out the AC.  :-D

Even if our furnace was working, I'd have to re-do all the outputs since they weave and bob all over the place so by the time the air gets where its going, it's cold already.

I also carry a small ceramic heater, which I use to keep the inside of the coach above freezing if/when I'm parked where the temperature might drop slightly below freezing overnight (I know it won't help if it gets a whole lot colder than that since there is so much plumbing open to the elements). It's a nice option when you're plugged in, and don't need to quickly warm up the interior - for THAT, the furnace is amazing (I was shocked the first time I used it on a cold night... I'm pretty sure I could stay toasty if the GMC was dropped onto the north pole - until I ran out of LPG, of course).

I think that the ceramic heaters are also 5000 watts, the same as the heat strip in the ceiling air conditioner. The reason that it fees warmer is that the heat from it is more localized and it at floor level and it takes a while for the hot air to blend into the rest of the motorhome. The ceiling heat strip is immediately blended in with the intake air of the air conditioner so it doesn't feel as hot -- however the same amount of heat (watts) is being added to the air. As Jphm Wright said they seem to take a long time to heat a coach. That is because of the immediate dilution with the cold air which takes place at head height instead of near your feet. Given some time it will keep the coach just as warm as the ceramic heater. In fact, if you let the ceiling heat strip run when you go to bed you might find that you have to get up in the night and turn it off as you coach may get too hot for you.

I also carry a ceramic heater in addition to my heat strip. I will often dig it out on a cold night and plug it in. 1. Because it has a thermostat control. 2. Because it is quieter than the ceiling air conditioner blower.

Jared,

Mine is a '73 also, but only 23'. We find that the heat strip can get us by to about 40°F. Below that, we have to run the gas heat.

We have done the ceramic heater trick too, but just hitting the switch on the overhead is easier and I don't have to dig it out.

On our Carrier, the heat strip is controlled by the thermostat. We only have one dog and she doesn't really like to share the bed with people.

When we lived in Northern Virginia, a single 13,5k but unit kept our 26 comfortable. I doubt if it will do the job here in Mississippi. We will add a 15k unit this Winter, unless told otherwise.
I did add the heat strip, but have not needed to use it yet. 40 year old furnace actually works.

Our cover is the most uncosmetic thing you have ever seen.  It's a big hunk of metal.  As can be seen here... http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/500/GMC_Motor_Home02.jpg

Kelvin,
I must say, your coach is beautiful; but that A/C on top looks like hell
by itself. You need to get one of those low profile A/C's.

Oh... so THAT'S what it's supposed to look like.  LOL.  No matter.  Just went ahead and bought a Dometic Brisk Duo online for around $600.

Where did you buy?
PPL Motohome is $660, delivered for a 13.5K unit. Enough for my 230.

Just curious. Still kind of waiting on a used unit from Texas...

The model ac I am trying to re cover
Is a dometic 54612-036. Of the two units, its shorter height wise than the other. I'm not sure of the 1 in the model number due to degradation of the tag but its my best guess. The blow molded cover which I need to replace is a brittle crumbling pile of s:(it. I do not want to replace with a new blow molded part which will degrade like this one has or abandon ship to join the others littering the interstate. A poor looking metal cover can be made to look nice with the right low gloss paint and will last practically forever. I think the one on your coach is the taller model 55912-041however. If it is the correct size for mine I am interested at least to use until I find an smc one.

Thanks,

Where did you buy?
PPL Motohome is $660, delivered for a 13.5K unit.  Enough for my 230.

Just curious.  Still kind of waiting on a used unit from Texas...

It's all yours if you want it.  Will you be at Branson?  (or know anyone going to Branson)  I won't be there but I can get it to someone who will be.

It is stamped into an Id plate which is riveted to the condenser on the rearward facing side of the unit. It will list the model#, serial #, btu etc. Nothing needs to be removed to see it.
