Got the rebuilt 403 back in the coach today.

All clean and pretty with fresh paint, rebuilt engine by John Beaver in Americus GA. Manny Tranny with Power Drive, New (to me) 321 differential.

My neighbor Bo came over to help me get it back in the coach. Took about an hour and a half counting fighting in the bolts on the motor mounts. Dang, that motor has to be sitting JUST RIGHT!

Now I have a few days putting in all the pieces parts. Still haven't decided if I'm going to put the headers on or not. My manifolds are good and I don't really think the headers will help much on an engine that runs at 2500-3000 rpm will they? And the exhaust system will be much easier to reinstall for the manifolds vs building a bunch of new stuff for the headers.

Also have to finalize where I'm going to mount my new oil cooler.

Btw, this air over hydraulic jack from Harbor Freight is worth its weight in GOLD!. It's currently on sale.

It's an 8 ton jack and it will lift the whole coach 6" in about 30 seconds with no effort.

Kerry,

I'd never really looked at then engine and transmission from the side like this - it's a pretty compact package, considering what it does!

<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/6382/n_001.jpg >

It's odd turning the power 270 degrees to get to the wheels. A transverse drive-train must be more efficient.

I was happy with it before and can't wait to see how it feels rebuilt with a 3.66 final drive.

As soon as I get it on the road again, I'm installing the Manny 1 ton that is in the crate in my shop.

...not to mention the governor gear can be easily accessed with stock manifold in place vs. pulling a header to get to it. Or to be more precise, waiting on the side of the road for the header to cool down, then pulling it, which in my case and my karma would mean breaking studs. Noise, heat, and access are the three reasons I'm planning to keep stock exhaust manifold with new SS exhaust and rear muff.

Sure looks nice there, Kerry!

John

Kerry,

People are probably wondering what the "H" are these two talking about so I reckon I better explain that in French:

Beau = Handsome
Fait = Made or done

So your car nut buddy is Handsome HandsomeMade! ;-)

Kerry,

Very nice. It looks like your going to be back in action soon. I have been wondering about this subject matter. I have a 455 in mine, been happy with it. Just had always wondered if there was a marked inprovment in gas milage with the 403? I know this is why GM went with it back in the 70's...just was wondering. I know we have people here that like both, just was wondering if this was something to consider?

Tom,

Olds dropped the 455 because:
* It was believed that smaller engines used less fuel (only partly true). This was the time of the first Arab Oil Embargo.
* The 455 (big block) line was in dire need of a complete refurbish.
* The 403 is almost the same horsepower and lighter (therefore less expensive).

If you talk to the 403 people, you will find that none have a power issue that does not also bother a 455 owner.

Matt

We only owned our 73 with the 455 for a short while. It had plenty of power. I've got about 3500 miles on the 403 in the 77 and it was fine also but I have no reference point because I haven't driven anything else. I was getting well over 11 mpg and driving very conservatively.

The choice of staying with the 403 vs the Cad 500 was one of time and money. The 403 was a considerably cheaper build and would bolt back right in. The Caddy would have cost me a good bit more and I would have had to spend considerable time and money making the accessories fit, buying and replacing all the external pieces parts like the carb, water pump, ect. Probably 2-3K all in all done.

And then there is the parts availability issue. Plus for the Olds.

The Cad would certainly have more power but I'm not sure I'll need it. The 403 will certainly keep me at highway speeds and with the power drive/3.21 combo the resulting 3.66 final drive should make any hills we encounter easier to climb. So far, I've only driven south from Huntsville and haven't climbed any mountains. Probably the most significant climb was on I65 just at the Lacon exit between Decatur and Cullman Al. it is a couple miles of probably a 20% slope. Nothing serious although trucks frequently top the hill at 20-30mph. We had no problem keeping 50mph but I was flat on the floor and slowly loosing speed. Another half mile of the climb and I'd have had to drop to second.

It will be interesting to see how we handle that climb with the new stuff.

We're planning on coming to Branson and I was concerned doing the Caddy would leave me iffy on enough time. While I enjoy the fabrication side, I really want my wife to enjoy the trip and the rally. Her only significant time in the coach was the trip to the LazyDays rally in January. While we had a great time, we did have some coach issues and I'm not sure she is as 'sold' as I am on this whole 'antique motorhome' thing. Very Happy
