G'day,

Well Helen got here on the 18th along with a sinus infection and cough, after 12 days in the terrific Texas temperature torrents the
coughing has minimized and she's feeling perkier.

I on the other hand have been feeling kinda crappy since last Friday; I attributed it to what I THOUGHT (and Helen as well) was a
boil that was coming up on the rear part of my left leg upper thigh. Helen was putting ointment on it to draw it out but it just
kept getting worse and I was feeling worse.

Yesterday I decided I'd better go see a quack to find out if it needed lancing. At any rate after determining out how to get a visit
to a clinic covered by my Aussie travel insurance off I went. Got to the clinic, filled out the obligatory forms and waited for the
doc. Nurse came in and wanted me to put on one of those backwards robes but I told her the location of the boil didn't require it..
A few moments later the doc came in, I unbuckled my belt and dropped my shorts.

The doc IMMEDIATELY noted; "son, that's NOT a boil! That's a BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER BITE! - looks pretty nasty - when did it happen?"

"I don't know - Thursday / Friday?"

"Good thing you came in, in a day or two you would have had dead flesh around it." "We'll give you three shots and three
prescriptions and that should take care of it." "You'll start feeling better by later this afternoon from the shots."

After leaving the office I went over to Lowes to get a fogger to kill the little bastard if he was in the GMC as I damn sure didn't
want Helen getting bit too.

I got a product to spray on the grass around the GMC to set up a kill zone and some foggers for the inside. This brought on an
interesting story. There were two foggers on the shelf made by Hot Shot. One was in a green box and noted that it killed spiders
(except for brown recluse); the second in a blue box killed spiders (no note in brackets). This caused a dilemma - did the second
kill brown recluse or not? Simple solution - call Hot Shot's customer service line.

Conversation went something like this:

Hi, I want to buy a fogger that kills brown recluse spiders and am at Lowes looking at two of your products, one's in a green box
and notes kills spiders (except for brown recluse) the second in a blue box kills spiders and there's no note after it.

My question is does the product in the blue box kill brown recluse spiders or not?

What's the produce code?

179277-587933

I've called up the item and it doesn't tell me whether or not it kills brown recluse spiders or not.

I'm sorry but that doesn't help me; I need to have a positive yes or no.

I can't tell, maybe it does maybe it doesn't?

How can I find out?

I don't have the specs so I can't tell you.

Can I write in and find out?

You'll get the same response, probably.

OK, well thank you.

I bought the blue product and fogged the GMC last night, so we're back in motel for a couple of days.

Regards,
Rob M.

PS - I am going to send an email to Hot Shot and see what kind of response I get it writing!

Rob, you're the only guy I know that could leave frickin' AUSTRALIA (where
EVERYTHING wants to kill you) and come to America and get bit by one of the
few troublesome critters we have.

If it'd been me, I'd have bought BOTH. In mass quantities. There is no
overkill. There is only "open fire!" and "reload!" :)

Robin,

Agreed, the doc told me that there are only two poisonous spiders in Texas, The Black Widow and the Brown Recluse and one of them
had to find me!

I have seen and killed (squashed) funnel web and red back spiders at my workshop.

Regards,
Rob

Raid Fumigator might do the job.

I searched "fogger that kills brown recluse spiders", and wandered around
to this.

Good luck on that, if you're using the "contact us" from the website.

I've had only 2 responses that way, even when I was asking where to buy
the product.
One of the responses was, "I'm sorry, we don't sell replacement remotes
for your model NAXA tv set.
they did refer me to a company that they said would sell me one. They
didn't answer the email.

Ron,

THANKS - I got a response from Hot Shot that NEITHER of their foggers kills brown recluse spiders so I wasted $10.00. The rep noted
that he was going to suggest they correct the info on the Blue box to reflect it doesn't kill BRS. He suggested their Spider and
scorpion spray.

Today I did find out where the little bastards were - in the storage unit next door to mine. It belongs to the facility owner and is
air conditioned, He has given me permission to use it when I want to keep cool, it is 40" feet by 18" and the A/C unit is 60,000
BTU. The other day when it was 102 F outside it was 82F in the shop! BEAUTIFUL to work in.

Momma BRS had a "nest" with two egg sacks(?) and one baby BRS in it. I found another adolescent BRS a bit higher on the door. The
momma wasn't very big and the baby was tiny, the adolescent was about the size of a quarter (legs out).

Will have to compute the cubic footage of the units so we can set off fumigators in Rich's, John's, and mine all at the same time.

Regards,
Rob M.

I am normally a cheap do it myself guy. But those brown recluse spiders will mess you up.

I would be pretty tempted to call a professional exterminator before i slept in the camper again. I would think it cheaper then another doctors bill.

Keep up with the doctor. I had a installer that worked for me get quite the infection, took a while to clear it all up.

Rob;
Glad you got it checked out within the 48hrs you may have had left. We
have a server in our restaurant whose friend in his late 20's died last
week caused by a spiker bite. He had gone ot the hospital 3 times to have
the infected area checked out, given some med's but never diagnosed as a
spider bite. It continued to fester under the skin with the result of blood
poising.

There is something the guys working on farm machinery up here put in their
trucks and machinery to keep rodents and spiders away. I'll ask him what
it is and post it.

Look forward to seeing you again.

Jon,

Yes I looked at some photos of the damage the little buggers can do and it was SCARY!

After finding the Momma, baby and adolescent BRS in my neighbors storage unit I believe that's where I got stung.

HOWEVER, since I got an answer from Hot Shot I am going to get a big bottle of Spider and Scorpion spray and douse the GMC
especially the bedroom area. The sheets, blankets and pillow cases are in the wash. The mattresses have been removed and I will
blast the area with air then vacuum everything up (naturally I'll watch for flying BRS's)!

Then I'll squirt everything under both beds with Spider and Scorpion spray along with the rest of the stuff.

We're taking pictures of the bite daily to make sure the black necrotic area is not getting larger and the red inflamed area is
getting smaller, could see the difference between yesterday and today.

Regards,
Rob M.

Easterd North Carolina is always trying hard to go back to being a swamp so we have a few bugs here.

When i need to kill things i skip Lowes and go to the feed and seed and get any number of concentrated chemicals. Usually permethrin. You dilute it for the task at hand.

Permethrin is the active ingredient in some retail insecticides but real carnage requires higher concentrations.
