Today I hoped to start genny, run acc, have adult beverage, all in the name of ginny maintenance.
First time ginny failed to start since i have had. Last time ran was maybe 2 months ago for approx one hour on trip home from jordan lake.

I do my normal of holding my primmer button and count to 5. (this is the switch I added to run fuel pump as found on this site)
I push and hold start button, it kicks over, and good I thought but no start. I try again , this time holding primmer for a little longer count. again no start.
Check spark at both plugs, for a 3 count of holding start button i only saw maybe one spark at each plug, but strong (how many sparks should i have seen for a fast 3 count?)
I check oil, slightly low, so I top off. I pull fuel line at pump assembly(filter assembly) that goes to carb and run again for 3 count, I see only a couple drops. (should a 10 count half fill a shot glass?)
I also remove screw at base of carb. I thought it might be a drain, to my surprise not only did no fuel come out, but it looks more like a needle valve than a drain. (I seated back in and turned it 2 turns out, does this sound correct?
Now after removing airfiler I decide to check my gas gauge which has always appeared to work. Main tank at 1/4, aux tank at 1/4. check level gauge, rear higher than front.
Maybe I need to have my drink inside the house, and pass on this idea of running genny til I have enough gas.
but answers to above questions may help me next time I get this same dumb idea of fixing a genny that may not be broke.
Thanks to all

The generator fuel pickup is only inserted into the main fuel tank 3/4 of
the way to prevent you from using the entire tank with the generator and
standing yourself. Fill the tanks and try, try again.

Brian,

1 1/2 turns out may be a better starting point.

I also say put more fuel in tanks. Had the same thing happen to me once. Gauge said I should have plenty of fuel to run Onan but would not run. Gassed it up and all was well. Did you pull the hose to see if fuel was pumping?
Good luck.

The classic 'is there gas in the tank'. Nope. Not to feel bad, I was once doing an auto show press event and they flew engineers in from Detroit as the show car wouldn't start. No gas. Trickier for us with the safety feature as 1/4 is empty to Onan. A lesson to learn is to power down AC Units and shut down Onan as you approach the 1/4 level so as not to have it lean out and die under load. Bad for hot engine, worse for bridge rectifier.

I think brain realized he was low on fuel.

but I guess to my non expert experiences with something related to what he is asking.

I would think if you got spark, you got spark. I would say it is rare to have it spark 1/2 of the time.

as for fuel. you figured out that was the issue. I just ran into an electric fuel pump(only a year old), on my dune buggy, was still pumping, but not fast enough. I was seeing fuel pump out of the line. so I thought I was good. chased a bunch of other stupid stuff, then went and replaced the fuel pump, because I thought too that it should of been a bit more volume.

I was right, new fuel pump had 4 times the volume when I changed it. and the vw ran fine. (would not idle or stay running with the other fuel pump).
