We waited to get him, the initial litter didn’t have a boy who was necessarily ‘show grade’. And when the ‘O’ littler appeared, we waited another week because at 8 weeks, “He’s not quite ready to leave Mama yet”. Nine weeks, I drove up to Missouri and got him late one Saturday morning. A white ball of fluff with happy black eyes and an inquisitive black nose. He was into everything in the van on the way home, stopping every so often to find his stuffed monkey, and shake it thoroughly.
Off we went to puppy class, conformation class, and out into the world. And to the occasional show until the terrible day he sneaked out unseen with me and got in front of a car. Both bones in his front leg were broken… I had to call and tell Kathy “I nearly got your dog killed”. A genius vet named Myron Downs put his leg back together, and after six weeks or so he started walking on it again… and shortly behaved as though it never happened.
He was our second Kuvasz, our first ‘show dog.’ He made the Standard by half an inch, with a beautiful flowing gait. Nice black nails and a coat ‘to die for’. And eventually in Greenville, he finished his Championship.
We acquired a cat, Macavity, from Maine Coon Rescue and as any new cat will, he disappeared under a bed. But, cat food receded in the dish, and there was evidence in the litterbox. So in three days we found the cat curled up next to him sleeping. There were two dead mice in front of his nose. And Macavity became ‘his cat’ forever.
Duke joined our pack, and later The Jazzman. But he still led when guarding was required. Gradually, he let the younger boys take the lead normally, but never relinquished point when danger was about.
At 11, age began to show. Slow to get up, loss of mass in his back leg muscles, and a bit of gauntness in his muzzle. His eyes began to cloud a little. Still he kept the lovely smooth movement, floating around the yard slowly. His checkup showed an enlarged testicle, so he was neutered the next morning. He recovered easily, and kept his appetite and calm demeanor. We dodged another bullet.
Now, he’s gone. The fluid movement is stilled, the happy eyes are closed forever. Our world is a darker place. Macavity has searched the house for his puppy, and repaired to his crate to wait for his return.
We have his ashes coming, at some point we’ll figure where they ought to go and take them there.

Sorry for your loss weather they are old or not so old it is tough to say goodby. I still miss all the dogs we had to put down as each one had their own and different personality.

Johnny, Hate to hear of your loss of such a faithful companion. He will remain in your heart forever, just lurking around the path to tomorrow. He is now showing off in the great beyond all of his grace and strength.

Johnny,
What a beautiful eulogy for The Old One. I'm still raw from the loss of our little guy and can sympathize.
These blessed GMC'ers helped me.

Johnny and I spent a whole day together on July 5. We (mostly he) worked and we rode and we talked and broke bread. I knew the big boy had limited days ahead but it is a shock for it to have happened so quickly.
I'll be thinking about Johnny and his canine friend over the next few days and being grateful that, for the time being, mine little guys are relatively young and healthy.

About four years ago we had to put down Beau, real Name Beauregard James Hopkins. The vet sent a card. I typed the front of the card below, pausing frequently to wipe tears away so I could see what I typed.
The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent, His eager body quivers, Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together....

Odd coincidence - another Larry with a dog named Beauregard. My beagle was a present from my sisters for my 10th birthday. He had a big bow, so the name kind of came with him.
I had resisted adopting another dog all these years as I knew the hurt when they go. My sister in law brought us our Little Guy, Trevor about 9 years ago and I was powerless to resist him, though I was rather grumpy. In no time at all he found his way into our hearts. The pain of long ago faded and we were enriched by this pure love of a dog. He's gone. A little over a week now and we all still find ourselves in tears from time to time. That pain returned, but I've learned something. This pain that prevented me from opening up to another pet is a liar. I now know that the joy and love our Trevor brought outweighs this wretched pain 100 times over, I'm just blind to it at the moment.
If I could offer a prescription to Johnny, or anyone consumed in mourning, it would be this. Mourn completely and let the sorrow flow through you. It can't last forever, but as it recedes you'll remember so many good years. Compare the two - as tough as the pain is, you'd never give up those blessed times to avoid it.

Well, I was in St Paul a month ago, prospecting a breeder I know.... and I'm headed for South Tejas next weekend to prospect another (and hopefully pick up a dinette). And I've a trip to Roanoke sometime this summer to see a third breeder. So, the GMC isn't gonna be empty. The big white dogs love riding in it and guarding it loudly at gas stations.
I have Oz' nephew and grand-nephew... but grand nephew has a bladder tumor. He;s stable at the moment, but the unfortunate odds are he won't make the end of the year. Those Dixielanders who made the Gadsden rally met him, and his pop was in Dothan at GMCMI Spring. A breeder friend collected Pop and froze him for future use, so I have a 'pick' to go horsetrading with. BWD folks are worse than GMCers for swapping around. Macavity is charged with teaching pupppies 'cat manners'. If they try to chase or play too roughly or don't stop when told to, he pulls a razor on them. They learn quickly.
Oh - for the recod, Kathy was Oz' breeder/co owner. I';m still happily marruied to Paula.

Well, I was in St Paul a month ago, prospecting a breeder I
know.... and I'm headed for South Tejas next weekend to
prospect another
(and hopefully pick up a dinette). And I've a trip to
Roanoke sometime this summer to see a third breeder.
So, the GMC isn't gonna
be empty. The big white dogs love riding in it and
guarding it loudly at gas stations.
I have Oz' nephew and grand-nephew... but grand nephew has a
bladder tumor. He;s stable at the moment, but the
unfortunate odds are
he won't make the end of the year. Those Dixielanders
who made the Gadsden rally met him, and his pop was in
Dothan at GMCMI
Spring. A breeder friend collected Pop and froze him
for future use, so I have a 'pick' to go horsetrading
with. BWD folks are

Funny things, dogs are, or should I say humans, we know we will out live them, but when the inevitable comes, we are emotionally crushed, lost for weeks, till we finally realize, we gave our furry companions a life worth living; a shared life, a family... Soon we are at peace, and usually decide to do it again. Stephanie and I are sorry for your loss and hope you soon find peace.
