the first one certainly counts, but it was solo, and even though it was 1400 miles, including a break down in Arkansas, it was still just me.
the real test of course is the family excursion.
myself and the three girls (my wife and two daughters, 5.5 and 2.5) hit the road this morning on the start of our trip back down to Naples, FL.
the first leg was approximately 500 miles from Detroit to Watkins Glen State Park in upstate NY.
the "truckster", as the kids are now affectionately calling her, did amazing. generator ran the entire time with no hiccups, averaged 8.5+mpg, the kids enjoyed themselves, and so did the little lady.
of course we got pulled over at the end of the journey by one of NY's finest, but it was just for a blown light over the license plate, but it certainly excited the kids (and me).
plan to enjoy the falls and wineries over the next few days and then off to DC to visit family. from there we plan to hit... Charleston, Savannah, Jekyll Island, and St Augustine, before heading home.
if anyone has any recommendations on places to stay, eat, or drink, im all ears, er eyes.
best to all of you!!

For D.C. Visit, good campgrounds are Cherry Hill, in MD. It actually is very near public transportation for trips into Federal District. Better is Prince William Forest Park, in VA (just off I-95), south of Woodbridge. Best if you have a toad, no easy public transportation solution.

How exciting. Sounds like a great adventure to some beautiful, historic
places. Update us along the way. Maybe on your way home you could go
through the Georgia "mountains"--Helen is a quaint Alpine village and not
too far north is an old fashioned family-style restaurant, Dillard House,
in Dillard, GA. You can float the Chatahoochie River in Helen plus there
lots of cute shops. Not sure it's still there, but the "Cabbage Patch"
Hospital, where CP dolls are born used to be near Helen. Enjoy safe
travels!

Guy,
Take a trip out to Fort Sumter, really interesting to see what they went through during the bombardment.

Sandra, Helen is going to be a little out of our range, but Rob, im adding Ft. Sumter to the list.
Watkins Glen State Park is really spectacular. I doubt we even saw 33% of this place (carrying the kids) and I was blown away. few pics follow....

waterfall pool swimming is tomorrow.
but I want to say, the gmc is exceeding my expectations. constant up and down (the inclines to get to the campground are no joke) has been a test, but no issues. and the ability to easily move away from the campsite by unplugging one cord and just driving is spectacular. also, having everything you need with you (bathing suit, sunscreen, tool box, beer etc etc) makes everything that much better/easier.
im in love.

Hello Guy,
Not sure of your route from Watkins Glen to DC but you may want to consider a trip to Knoebel's, a really nice old timey Amusement Park. When I bought a Geo Tracker a few years ago in Buffalo, I took my young son with me to drive it back to Long Island and we planned a stop there.

Despite heavy rain, we still had a great time and talk of a return someday. Great, and very reasonably priced food and a campground too. It's pretty direct from Watkins Glen but there are mountains between. Sounds like a wonderful trip you're having and I hope it's as trouble free as possible. I'm really enjoying reading about it.
