I wonder if this little 12 volt computer could be made to work as an interface with What's Up Display. It operate Linux or Android, so that's the barrier I see, maybe running WINE on Linux would allow communication with the serial port and display. If I understand it correctly the computing needs for What's Up Display are very small. This little bugger can be configured to be quite a computer.

The base model is a hundred bucks and has two HDMI ports that could connect to any mounted monitor. It has bluetooth so you could use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or use the 4 USB ports. It does WiFi too. It can be configured up to 4 gigs of memory and a 512 gigs of storage. Certainly this would be somewhat more than $100...
It's about an inch thick and measures less than 4" x 5.5". You could place that just about anywhere - on the back of a monitor - in the glove box - really anywhere.
