Hello,

I am new to the forum and currently getting serious about purchasing my first GMC. I am seeking a coach that is drivable and in original condition or close to it (hopefully a Palm Beach or Glenbrook). I see there are quite a few listed on Bethune Sales and craigslist.

I am located in New York so I thought I'd see if anyone here is familiar with a coach that fits the description before I make a trip to see one.

Many thanks!

Having recently driven a car in Brooklyn, I would not want to do it in a GMC.
Being 35 or so years old, an original is probably difficult to find.
Ken Frey, in PA, may be able to steer you to a nice coach.
Welcome to the cult.

Where would one park a motor home in Brooklyn? I bought a car from my dads cousin in 1957 the car was 10 years old with very low miles he rarely used it because it was so hard to find a parking place on the street where he lived in Brooklyn.

Agreed Tom! Brooklyn is no place for a GMC.

We do a lot of traveling throughout the Northeast and Midwest. Home for this coach will be upstate - about an hour outside of the city.

And that will be your first mistake if you are not an experienced mechanic, electrician, and plumber, or independently wealthy. My apologies if you are any or all of the above.

Original condition means everything will need to be rebuilt.

If you want to get in and drive, find one that has has all of the systems gone through, and has been used recently. Like an airplane, they age better when kept in use. Here is one in Rochester that has a nice list of updates:

The Palm Beach in Palm Beach hasn't been on the road in 12 years. Deep pockets territory to make it drivable.

SMT, if and when you get a GMC, check out the Nor'easters. They're the FMCA GMC chapter closest to you.

Hi Sara, welcome to the group.

I would start your search with meeting some nearby owners and talking with them about their coaches, models and layouts they prefer.

If your still looking or have found one, make plans to be at the national convention in Branson in late Sept! Sign up will start soon.

They all will need work but will cost less if you go for one in good shape now.

Welcome Sara;
Yes a GMC belongs in Brooklyn and Glenn and Darlene Gregory of Thunder Bay,
Ont and my Wife Sharon and Myself had the pleasure each in our 26ft GMC
Classics to do an unplanned tour of New York. Our GPS (not an RV one) took
us on a thrilling ride last September. We were coming from conneticut and
headed for Jersey City Habour RV park when lights started flashing saying
we were overheight and to turn ahead. We did and found ourselves in the
Bronx - 3rd avenue which then led us onto and down Park Ave. Yellow taxi's
started to appear then we went right thru the Met Life building and onto
Broadway leading us in rush hour traffic to the entrance of the Holland
Tunnel. We had now spent 2 hrs in new york. The Sign above the tunnel
entrance "No CAMPERS" "No PROPANE" and I stopped blocking the left lane
trying to figure what to do next. There was a police officer in his car
across the road on my right. Glenn and I jusmped out of our coaches and
turned off hte Propane and when back int he drivers seat the cop got out of
his car and walked across to a small building attached to the tunnel. He
never looked back so I figured "Get out of here now" Off we went thru the
tunnel and when settled into our campsite - exhausted from the just
completed "thru New York and Holland Tunnel and not to return" Not sure
how many others have done the same but it goes to show a GMC can enture
where no man or woman should go!!!
Best regards

Plan now to join us in Detroit in June of 2014 then take Route 66 to

Hello Dwayne. Dicing it up in NY City traffic is an acquired taste. Driving through the tunnels is not suggested. That would be a quick way to get a cavity search, and I'm not talking about the propane compartment. Shocked

That being said I never had trouble with the actual driving. Roads with you-must-be kidding distances between warning signage and low bridges do present some impromptu testing of your adrenaline delivery system. And the GPS almost always lies. I've had some that refused to acknowledge the always-avoid-this-road command, and others that would insist on trying to put me on the Parkways on Long Island, which is totally verbotten. Except for one _small_ stretch where you are allowed to take the Parkway to access the barrier island of Long Beach and the campground at Nickerson Beach (reasonable campground and a great beach BTW). However, the only place you are allowed to access that one _small_ stretch of permissible Parkway is accessed by a tight radius entrance ramp which dumps you out exactly at that you-must-be-kidding distance signage. Essentially you have to merge into the center lane immediately if you want to keep the top of your coach intact.

Hop back on that horse, Dwayne - just avoid the tunnels and low-flying bridges and you'll be fine.

Richard

Sara -

I have a 1976 Palm Beach. When I bought it two years ago, I mistakenly assumed my wife would share my enthusiasm for it. Unfortunately, her opinion hasn't changed over time, so I'm selling this one. (My GMC days are not done, however; I will replace this one with a 23' coach that's just for me! But more on that later . . .). Very Happy

I'm its third owner; it has about 56,200 miles on the original motor and transmission. It will have about 550 more miles on it by the end of the week as I return home to Columbus, Ohio from visiting family in Wisconsin.

It came with two captain's chairs, front fold-down dinette, davo bunks, and rear fold-down dinette, along with a wet bath, gas range, two roof air conditioners, roof storage pod and ladder.

How original? The front dinette and davo have always had cloth slip covers on them. The factory shag carpet was covered with green wool pile carpet and has never been walked on. The captain's chairs are still there, although they are a little faded from the sun.

If you're interested let me know, and I'll figure out how to send you pictures. I'll also answer whatever questions you have.

Good luck in your search,

Richard Peck
1976 26' Palm Beach

P.S. TO ALL:

Although I just registered to respond to Sara, I have learned so much from this forum over the past three years. Thanks so much to all of you, who so freely share your knowledge and time!
