Proud new owner of a 1976 Royale. I've already mined this forum for incredible amounts of information, and plan to check in regularly. Looks to be a wealth of good information and good people.

Since I'm the noob here and not sure how your folks roll or exactly where to post what, I'll just add that I succeeded in securing collector plates for my new rig, even though the WA DOL told me twice that motorhomes were not eligible. If anyone has had issues with this I'd be happy to share my experience.

Otter,

First-
Welcome to the group/family/cult/asylum.

Next, it would be a good idea to build a sigfile that has a real name, a coach description and some geographic reference. That way, when you do have questions (and you will), we will know who we are talking to, what we are talking about and where you are if we can get there to help (this happens all the time in this group - see below).

Things like, Royales were fitted out by Coachman and may not be the same as a GMC, are things that people here actually know all about. Problems having to do with local issues are also discussed.

Lastly, I expect that if you have not found out already, you will soon, that being a GMC owner makes you a part of a community that is rare. This will also make the GMC more a part of your life than one would expect of "just another toy". It is much like the way watermen (like me) relate to our boats. That causes my to welcome new owners as I would any new owner or vessel. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome [Otter]

Matt

Welcome from another noob. Yes please do share your experience, I will be trying to get collector plates from WA DOL soon.

Getting collector vehicle plates in WA.

So in Washington State, any road worthy vehicle over 30 years old can get "collector plates". These plates have no annual fee and are intended for vehicles that are not your primary means of transportation. Or so I thought.

I called our local license place and told them I wanted to transfer tile and get collector plates. I was told you could not get collector plates for a motor home. After a brief discussion I gave up. To the InterWebz!!!

From the WA DOL site:

"For vehicles:
To use collector plates, vehicles must be:
More than 30 years old.
Capable of operating on the highway.
Owned and operated as collector vehicles.
For license plates:
Collector Vehicle plates:
May be assigned to currently registered passenger vehicles, motorcycles, or trucks.
Are good for the life of vehicle (aren’t renewed annually).
Don’t need to display month/year tabs.
Must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. (You must provide your restored or
current license plates. If you provide a set, the collector vehicle plates may be
displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle).
For driving:
You can drive a collector vehicle:
To and from auto shows, circuses, parades, displays, special excursions, and antique
car club meetings.
For testing purposes.
For the pleasure of others without compensation.
You can’t drive a collector vehicle for regular transportation in the manner of a fully
licensed vehicle."

Hmmmm, the Royale seems to meet all criteria, but there is room for interpretation. The sticky part might be "passenger vehicles, motorcycles, or trucks", since the Royale doesn't exactly fit any of those categories.
So I searched for the full text of the law and found:

"(1) What is a collector vehicle license plate? For the purposes of this section a collector vehicle
license plate is a special license plate indicating "Collector Vehicle." The smaller size collector vehicle
license plate is available for motorcycles. Collector vehicle owners must conform to the rules under
RCW 46.16.307.
(2) What vehicles qualify for a collector vehicle license plate? Any motor vehicle which is:
(a) More than thirty years old; and
(b) Capable of being operated upon the highway; and
(c) Currently registered in Washington; and
(d) Operated primarily as a collector vehicle."

Ah, there we go! "Any motor vehicle" that is "Operated primarily as a collector vehicle." That's my escape clause. The Royale is a motor vehicle, and it will be operated primarily, but not exclusively, as a collector vehicle.

So documentation in hand I head to the licensing bureau. I am again told (by a different clerk) that motor homes are excluded, so I showed him the printed text of law. After reading it he agreed that the Royale fit all criteria, and off I went, collector plates in hand.

Here's a link to the law: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=308-96A-074

Hello Otterwan,

Welcome to the GMC forum.
My wife & I are fairly new to the group as well. Just a bit over a year now.
We are on the other side of the country in Miami, Florida

When I saw your photo of your 76 Royale, and showed my wife, we both got excited because we have the same model & color as yours.
It even appears we may have the same interior too.
We are trying to keep ours as original as possible. We love stepping into our time machine from the 70's
We love our "Scobby Doo" and just wanted to write in and say, you got a great lookin GMC.
Link to photos of our GMC : Scooby Doo

Sincerely,

Hey Glen. Frank Lloyd Wright would design clothes for some of his clients to wear in the home he designed for them. With your original interior I hope you're wearing the correct period attire. Either a leisure suit in robin's egg blue with really wide lapels and a polyester shirt, or some wiiiide bell bottoms with a peace sign embroidered on the ass pocket and a paisley polyester shirt. It's only fitting. Wink

Richard,
In 1976 I was in 11th grade, I was wearing a tye dye shirt, levi blue jeans, converse sneakers and hair down to my shoulders.
Its 2013 and I'm still wearing the same thing, except it is several sizes larger.
So, yes we are very at home in our GMC !

That wouldn't work in good ol' Washington State. The title says "MH" for motorhome under body type. If you entered something different on the collector plate application it would raise a flag.

But you don't need to. The law as written is on your side. At least in this case ;o)

I have " historic vehicle " plates on the War Pig. Lifetime registration and no inspection. They told me at the dol that it was limited to parades and 1500 miles a year or so and that I could not use it for camping. I just nodded at them and walked out with the plates. That was three years ago.

eligible. If anyone has had issues with this I'd be happy to share my

Gene,

Alabama vintage plates are $10 (don't know if that is per year, or one-time fee).

QUOTE
A "vintage vehicle" is: (i) a private passenger automobile, truck or truck tractor which weighs not more than 26,000 pounds gross weight, motorcycle, or fire truck, (ii) over 30 years old, (iii) operated as a collector's item, including participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and not used for general transportation purposes, (iv) a vehicle having the original or substantially similar vehicle body, chassis, engine, and transmission as designated for that make, model, year, and age vehicle.

"Vintage vehicle" license plates shall remain with the vehicle when sold or otherwise disposed of, and the new owner shall transfer the registration into his or her name in accordance with the provisions of Sections 40-12-260 and 40-12-261, if the vehicle will be operated in accordance with this section, and, if not, standard license plates shall be obtained.
UNQUOTE

I opted for standard license plates because I believe that driving from AL to MI and back a couple times a year, plus other stuff not rally related, falls under the "general transportation purposes" category. If one can dismiss that sort of use with a clear conscience, then the vintage tag is the way to go in Alabama.
