Just had the belts replaced on my 73 after they broke and ended up winding around the power steering pump. Power steering pump replaced as well. When we went to pick it up from the place we had the work done, she started up and ran wonderfully. (This place works on many GMCs) Went outside the coach to remove the power cord to get ready to head out and saw a puddle of coolant coming from the coach.

Uh oh.

Shut her off and climbed underneath to check to see where it was coming from. Was not coming from any of the hoses that I could see. Is it possible when the belt broke it jerked something else out of line and damaged a gasket? The leak seemed to be very slow but very consistent. It stopped when the engine stopped. Water pump?

Going back tomorrow to work with the mechanic to see if we can figure it out together. I hope this won't end up costing me too much. Sad Any ideas from the peanut gallery?

Thanks as always!

Water Pump, Radiator, Hoses. If you or the mechanic has a radiator pressure tester, It should be easy to find.

Thanks Ken. Hopefully this is an easy one. We have a big trip planned for next weekend.

I almost bought a pressure tester 2 weeks ago when Harbor Freight them for 1/2 off. I never made it over there. I do have friend I can borrow one from. If I had used one last September on my GMC I would not have misdiagnosed and removed my non-leaking GMC radiator. The problem turned out to be in the hose and not the radiator itself.

About 6 GMCers stopped by, pulled, and reinstalled my non-leaking radiator. I had to leave town so they did it for me. I really felt stupid when they found that the lower hose had a small crack on the top of it rather then the radiator being bad itself. Had I used a pressure tester, I probably would have figured out it was the hose and not the radiator.

I remember that. Our leak does not look to be coming from the radiator at all. Hopefully its a hose that is cracked as well.

nice to have a mechanic you can trust. A friend took his 2 year old Bounder into the local RV dealer with a list of things too check. The Onan didn't start $400 to replace what looked like a new carburetor They told him 2 months was too long a time to not run it? It tripped his 20 amp land line when he opened the slide they told him there was a short in the converter he told them he needed to think about it and paid the $400. He took it home and found a screw was shorting the microwave circuit in the wall and the converter was fine. The shop charges $150 an hour he won't be going back there again.

Very Possibly the belts took out the water pump.  If this is the case, while they are replacing the pump, be sure they inspect the pulleys very carefully.  One is simply tack welded to the stack and can easily ben pulled off or bent.  Ask me how I know this :)

Was it just a matter of welding the pulley back on?

Yes.  Steve the Mechanic knew an old machinist who chucked the assembly up in his lathe, tacked it, trued it, and then welded it.  Better than the original.  I was given to believe the three sheave pulley used on a GMC with A/C is a one - off part.  Had the welding not fixed it, I was gonna have JimK airfreight one for AM delivery.

An Update...

The radiator cap was loose just barely and it was leaking down the back side where we could not see where it was coming from.

Laughing

I'll take it.
