What does the switch on my dash board labeled "main tank/auxiliary tank" do?

Ejects the main or auxiliary anti-matter core. Laughing

Actually it selects which tank the fuel pump draws from (main or aux). What make it strange is that the tanks are actually interconnected. There's a good write-up on just how the tank(s) work. Pretty good "what were they thinking" kinda reading. If I can find it, I'll post up the link.

From Jim B site:

*How does the fuel system work, do I have 2 separate fuel tanks?* A common
question, you do have 2 fuel tanks under the coach but the actually act as
1.

The single fuel feed fills both tanks, the fill comes into the tanks at @
1/4 up on the side of the tanks. Thus, the 2 tanks are physically tied
together at that level and share fuel above 1/4 full.

Watch your fuel gauge, it should show the same level until you drop below
the 1/4 level. Then, the gauge will show a different level when you switch
to "aux" tank. If you leave the switch on "main" and run out of fuel, you
will still have @ 6 gallons of fuel in the "aux" tank. The dash switch
should have been labeled "reserve fuel- on/off". This way, no one would
think there were 2 separate tanks, run the main dry and then freak out when
they switched to the "aux" tank to find only 1/4 tank of fuel there.

Actually, the last 1/4 tank will drop the fuel needle like a rock because
it is actually reading only one tank as it was reading the fuel in both
tanks before. The needle will also drop quickly when you switch to "aux"
because it too is only seeing fuel from one tank and will drop twice as
fast as before 1/4 tank.

If this is a bit fuzzy, just remember to leave the switch on "main" and
know if you have to you have another 6 gallons of so of fuel if you forget
and run out of fuel if you flip the switch to "aux". GOT IT?

You have a level sender in each tank. Although the tanks are interconnected. By the fill line, when the level in the tanks falls below the inlet connections you draw separately from the tanks by using the Main/Aux switch.

When in main your gauge will read the main or rear tank. Your fuel elwill be drawing through the fuel tank selector valve from the rear tank. When you move the switch to the Aux position the fuel selector valve is switched to draw from the front tank. At the same time , your fuel gauge is now reading from the front tank.

Ron,

The dash switch will change the fuel gauge from main to auxiliary tank and will send a signal to the valve.

Be aware that the valve may not be working correctly even
if you can hear it 'click' when someone toggles the switch.

I had this happen to me and ran out of gas on one tank but the other tank still had plenty of fuel. Internally, the valve was not switching between the lines.

I hope this is an open book exam.

Per the Operating Manual:

FUEL SELECTOR SWITCH
The fuel selector switch, located below the warning light cluster, has two positions-"FUEL MAIN" and "FUEL AUX." This switch allows the driver to change the fuel pick-up and fuel gauge sending unit from the main tank, as it goes empty, to the auxiliary tank which will normally contain 7 to 9 gallons of fuel. It is recommended that any time the fuel system is filled, this switch be put in the "FUEL MAIN" position and left there until auxiliary fuel is needed.

Operating Manual for your 76 is here:

Someone want to talk about the generator?
Ok. Fuel pickup for Onan is at about 1/4 tank level so you cannot strand yourself while camping. Many Onans have been cursed when they were not broke, just operator error. Also if you are running rooftop ACs shut them down and then shut down the Onan as you approach this low fuel mark. Having the Onan die under high AC load can blow the bridge rectifier in the Onan. Best to let it run a min or 2 with no load to cool down as well, then hold stop till fully stopped.
