Trevor, I'm assuming that you are going to be arriving in Los Angeles. But wherever you arrive, how do you plan to handle the logistics? Are you looking for coaches within a day's drive of your arrival point, for instance? Or how about flying to Seattle?

But if I were just pick one that catches my eye, this one in Phoenix:

i have done a similar thing before . as we have not booked tickets yet we will decide where we will fly into after we have bought a coach. last time i purchased a conversion van in Maryland so we flew to LA then took a domestic flight to Washington DC hired a Caddy for three days then drove down to ocean City and picked up the van. we then drove to LA and sold the van there before flying home. this time we will just stick to one side of the states. i have shipped cars from Miami before as well as the west coast. it doesn't matter where we go it will just be an adventure

Yeah, but what caught my eye was the 'new engine' part. Further inquiry is definitely required on this one but it might be a professionally rebuilt coach.

>adventure

OK, just so you know the risks (and hidden costs).

I'm curious, though, as to how one obtains a title, license plates, and insurance for what becomes a foreign-owned vehicle??

If this were my adventure, I'd contact Jim Washburne about his coach. (I do not personally know Jim or the coach.)

I recently bought my third GMC, a 1974 Palm Beach for $4200. It has all new CR Laurence windows, nice paint, all new interior, new cabinetry, rebuilt front end with upgrades, aluminum wheels, a screen door and lots more. It was on craigslist in the Portland, OR area. $4200! I've had to put in a new furnace and it needs one of the two roof a/c's replaced and an awning. The engine has an aluminum intake, stainless headers, 3" exhaust (new), MSD ignition and it runs like a new one. It may have been rebuilt, but $4200!

Interesting! We tried to buy a car in NY on one of our trips to the states and drive across to Seattle but I was told it was not possible for us from overseas to get the vehicle registered and insured for our use, we had to be citizens of the state. We ended up hiring a car drove to Seattle and bought a conversion van in Seattle in my sons name as he was working in the US at the time it was okay for him to have ownership and get registration and insurance. Go figure that.

Trevor, having lived in NSW for a couple years (and visiting Brizzy a couple times), I know what an adventurous lot you guys are... Wink

It would be a grand adventure to fly half-way around the world to buy a 40 year old motorhome, and then work out the logistics of getting it back to Oz, not to mention the daunting task of getting it licensed there (which, according to what I've read, could involve relocating the door to the left side of the coach). But there are other threads about that...

It's really (REALLY!) hard to find "the right one" from online resources - I've gone on look-see trips to examine what appeared to be really solid coaches, only to arrive at what might be a parts coach - or at best, a really, really involved project coach. But as long as you're not in a hurry, and don't mind driving all over the place to find the right one, it could be a lot of fun. My advice is to spend more to find one that's had all the updates, upgrades, and maintenance done already. You'll save a boatload of money in the long run and will have a coach you can use immediately (as opposed to a project that will take weeks, errrr, month, oops, years to get ready for its first real adventure).

I suppose you'll want to find something in proximity to the west coast, to facilitate getting it back to Oz - I'd say you could easily limit your search to southern California and Arizona - both states have a lot of coaches for sale, and have the advantage of a very dry climate (not unlike the east coast of Australia) so will tend to be free of rust or serious water leak damage.

Trevor, drop me a line if you like, and I'll send you some detailed info on the coach I found in Los Angeles about a year ago(a great example of a "ready-to-go" coach), that you can use as a feeler for what you might find.

Peter,

IIRC Montana allows foreigners to register vehicles.

I cannot imagine the usual North Carolina DMV field office (many run by subcontractors rather than the state) being able to process a foreign sale. *IF* such a procedure is technically available you are likely to have to do the research and be the one to provide them with the reference to their own rule book.

last time i bought the van in maryland
we had a friend in LA where we could use his address . as we were moving interstate we bought the van from a dealer (1991 Chevvy $1200) we got a 60 day temporary tag. we found an insurance company that would insure us if we had a US mailing Address. i was given the title papers but as we never registered this in California i Just transferred these to the new owner. he paid me $1350 for the van off of Ebay i dropped at at his place the day we were due to fly out. He provided a limo to the airport. only problems we had is blew an alternator in indiana $156 and a master cylinder in Wendover $123. my motto is if it breaks i will fix it .

Hi Peter
before we bought we had researched the tempory tag situation in each state and had found that maryland will issue a temp tag 30 days for private sale and 60 days through a dealer . also the dealer could lodge and fill all the paper work for us.

I gotta say after reviewing them I recognize the 23' in Fla.It is at an Rv dealership and
they use it all the time and go to Daytona every year in it.They had it for years, asking $13k and I tried to get it at one point.I was trying to finance it and got approved. When
I read the paperwork it said GMC pickup with 455 engine.J.J. Best will only finance Classic Rv's in the Northeast close to their office.I think also if you get insurance first
its easy to get registered anywhere, even a temp.
